16x9 Gooper 2024 5 Bucs to Watch

The Atlanta Falcons will make their annual trip to Tampa Bay in Week 8 to take on the Buccaneers, on Oct. 27, for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff on FOX. The Buccaneers and Falcons are tied for the best record in the NFC South at 4-3 and the victor on Sunday will take sole possession of the division lead. In the last meeting between the two teams in Week Five, the Falcons won in overtime in an offensive shootout, 36-30. Kirk Cousins managed to spike the ball with one second to spare for a Younghoe Koo 52-yard field goal that tied the game at the end of regulation and KhaDarel Hodge scored from 45 yards out to end the matchup. In the Week Eight rematch at Raymond James Stadium, here are five Buccaneers to keep an eye on following kickoff:

Tyrek Funderburk

In Week Five, Drake London took advantage of free releases at the line of scrimmage and picked up effective run-after-catch, en route to 154 yards and a touchdown against the Bucs. London, who has emerged as the Falcons' top receiving threat, dominates at the catch window and uses his strength to box out defenders and to extend on contested throws. London creates a mismatch with his size and has caught a touchdown in five of his seven games thus far in 2024. Jamel Dean is dealing with a hamstring injury and was placed on injured reserve, thrusting Tyrek Funderburk into the starting role opposite Zyon McCollum. Funderburk, an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State, impressed during the offseason workout program and made the final roster despite missing time due to injury. He possesses stellar straight-line speed and understanding of when to jump routes. Funderburk is adept in both man and zone and is a willing run supporter. He will play a key role in trying to mitigate London's damage on Sunday.

Jalen McMillan

With injuries to both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin (injured reserve), the Buccaneers will need third-round rookie Jalen McMillan to step into a prominent role on offense. He emerged against the Ravens, picking up yards-after-catch on a jet sweep. McMillan has versatility playing both in the slot and out wide at Washington. The Bucs will not be able to duplicate Godwin's stellar production out of the slot, but the unit can utilize a collective effort through multiple personnel groupings to supplement the volume he produced. McMillan has long-strided speed and the ability to bait defensive backs by generating space with fakes. On Sunday, he will face off with cornerback A.J. Terrell. Terrell has accumulated three passes defensed, 33 tackles and a tackle for loss. He effectively disrupts the catch window and has the ability to mirror receivers with solid footwork and hip fluidity.

Cody Mauch

Grady Jarrett anchors Atlanta's defensive line with penetration up the middle. He leads the Falcons with eight quarterback hits and moves along the line to create favorable matchups. With a powerful frame and quickness off the snap, Jarrett is a nightmare for centers/guards. On Sunday, he will face Bucs' right guard Cody Mauch at some point. Mauch has allowed two sacks this season per PFF and plays with a competitive disposition. He is effective on down blocks and finishes in the run game to extend lanes. The North Dakota State product possesses outstanding mobility and lateral range for pulling duties in gap schemes. Mauch is impressive out in space, assisting in sparking screens, sweeps and zone runs. He will play a critical role in helping to ignite the ground game on Sunday.

Rachaad White

With contributions from Rachaad White, Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker, Tampa Bay's running back corps ranks first in the NFL in scrimmage yards (801) and receiving yards (275) since Week Five, while ranking second in rushing yards (526) during that span. Irving has been dealing with a toe injury and did not participate in Wednesday's walk-through, so White will likely see a heavy load against the 24th ranked rush defense. With injuries to both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, White is expected to play a key role in the passing game with his prowess in space. He is a natural runner past the second level and can adjust to make catches out of the backfield. White has quick burst getting north and will look to make a mark against a divisional foe.

Yaya Diaby

In Week Five against the Bucs, Kirk Cousins threw for over 500 yards and threw four touchdowns. This time around, Bucs outside linebacker Yaya Diaby will play a vital role in affecting Cousins in the pocket. Diaby sacked Lamar Jackson on the first defensive series in Monday Night's matchup, coming underneath on a twist. He displayed his power and short-area burst, solidifying the Bucs' defensive front. Diaby also tallied five tackles, including two for a loss to limit the Ravens on the ground in the first half. Falcons running back Bijan Robinson runs with elite contact balance and can stack moves to reset his course away from traffic. With sudden jump-cuts and a finishing mentality, Robinson adds another dimension to the Falcons' ground attack. Diaby will aim to command the line of scrimmage on Sunday, forcing the opposing team into disadvantageous down-and-distance situations.
