5 Bucs to Watch vs 49ers

In Week 10 at Raymond James Stadium, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will face the defending NFC champion San Francisco 49ers for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Sunday, November 10 on FOX. The 49ers are ranked in the top-five in total and rushing offense in 2024. San Francisco and Baltimore are the only teams to be top-five in pass and rush offense in 2024. After starting the year 4-2, the Buccaneers have lost their last three outings and on Sunday, Tampa Bay will strive to change course with a tally in the win column. The Bucs are in second place in the NFC South behind the Falcons and will seek to build momentum heading into the bye. Here are five Buccaneers to keep an eye on following kickoff.

Tristan Wirfs

Tristan Wirfs, one of the league's premier tackles, has allowed zero sacks this season per PFF. He is adept at executing pulls on counter gap runs and has helped spur the Bucs' resurgent run game in 2024. Wirfs has natural athleticism and rare twitch for his size. He can redirect power from rushers to keep the pocket clean and is as technically sound as it gets in the pros. The left tackle faces another steep challenge in Week 10 with Nick Bosa coming to town. Bosa, the 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, leads the 49ers with 4.5 sacks and has 14 quarterback hits. He quickly defeats single blocks and has powerful leg drive to influence the line of scrimmage. With a jarring punch and excellent read-and-react skills, Bosa overwhelms.

Cade Otton

Cade Otton currently ranks in the top two among NFL tight ends in targets, receptions, receiving yards per game and receiving touchdowns since Week Seven. He has become the team's most productive weapon with the absence of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin in the lineup. Otton scored on a wheel route against the Chiefs and continues to showcase his ability to separate in man, as well as exploit soft spots in zone. Otton has the talent to exploit coverage at all three levels and the 49ers will likely key in on No.88. Otton plays nearly every offensive snap for the Bucs, and on Sunday he will go up against one of the league's best coverage linebackers in Fred Warner. Warner has totaled six passes defensed, four forced fumbles and two interceptions in 2024. He possesses stellar change-of-direction skills, hip fluidity, downhill trigger and cover prowess in space. Warner combines elite athleticism with high-effort. He was named a first-team All-Pro for the third time in four seasons following the 2023 campaign and plays with intent every snap.

Jordan Whitehead

Deebo Samuel, the do-it-all phenom, is a versatile chess piece in Kyle Shanahan's arsenal. He caught four passes for 71 yards in Week Eight and thrives with the ball in his hands. Samuel plays with a competitive disposition and steamrolls past tackles after the catch. Whether going in motion as eye candy, catching the ball out of the backfield or running the ball, Samuel is proficient. His ability to line up anywhere on the field does not tip the offense's hand and the Bucs' secondary will play a pivotal role in containing him. Jordan Whitehead, the Bucs' fearless safety, is an enforcer. He plays a physical brand of football and is second on the Bucs with 59 tackles. Whitehead not only excels in the box but manning the post as well. With a quick first step, lethal downhill charge and awareness/range at centerfield, Whitehead will help bolster the Bucs' defense in preventing YAC yards. Whitehead is nursing a quad injury but is expected to play against the 49ers.

Lavonte David

George Kittle is one of the most well-rounded tight ends in the game. He is averaging 71.9 receiving yards per game in 2024 (first among tight ends). In contrast, the Bucs have allowed 627 yards (69.7 per game) to tight ends this year (31st). Kittle runs routes like a receiver, transforms into a running back after the catch and blocks like an offensive lineman. He helps set the edge in the run game and drives defenders back. If Kittle gets his hands inside, he can pancake defensive ends. In the passing game, he has the vertical speed to work the seam and can beat defensive backs on deep over routes. On Sunday, Buccaneers' Lavonte David will be tasked with covering Kittle. David, regarded as one of the best off-ball linebackers in the game, pairs elite play recognition with fluid footwork in transition. He has produced four passes defensed and an interception in 2024 and will vie to contain Kittle in Week 10. David is adept in both man and zone and will play a pivotal role in minimizing the 49ers' positionless star.

Yaya Diaby

Last season, Yaya Diaby's monster performance against San Francisco garnered a full-time role in the Buccaneers' defensive front. Diaby tallied 2.0 sacks for 16 yards, four tackles and three tackles for loss in the 2023 matchup with the 49ers. Nose tackle Vita Vea currently leads the Bucs in sacks with 5.0 but this could be a breakout game for Diaby. The Louisville product is a power rusher with impressive short-area burst. With lateral burst and effectiveness on twists/stunts, Diaby helps fortify the unit in Tampa Bay. Although his numbers may not wow on the stat sheet, he routinely finds his way into the backfield and will look to disrupt Brock Purdy's progressions on Sunday.
