The Tampa Bay Buccaneers left an open spot on their 91-man preseason roster with a couple of personnel moves on Monday morning, but it wasn't open for long. While the team opened a new week of practice at the AdventHealth Training Center, rookie defensive lineman Brandon Matterson was upstairs signing a contract. Matterson not only fills the roster vacancy but also an empty spot in the defensive line group after Eric Banks was waived/injured a few hours earlier.
Matterson (6-2, 295) originally entered the NFL this spring as an undrafted free agent out of Texas-San Antonio with the Denver Broncos. He was later waived by Denver about a week into the team's training camp.
AT UTSA, Matterson started 20 of the 59 games in which he played from 2018-2023. He recorded 100 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and a pass defensed during that span, including 5.0 sacks in 2023. He will wear jersey number 56 for the Buccaneers.
