Not only will the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have all 11 starters from last year's high-powered offense back in 2024, but one of the key reserves for that group is returning as well. On Thursday, fifth-year quarterback Kyle Trask agreed to a new one-year contract with the team.
The Buccaneers originally drafted Trask out of Florida with the final pick of the second round in the 2021 draft, with the Heisman Trophy candidate joining a team fresh off of victory in Super Bowl LV. Trask was a Heisman finalist after a 2020 campaign in which he led the nation in touchdown passes (43) and finished second in passing yards (4,283).
Since his arrival in Tampa, Trask has served as a backup to first Tom Brady and then Baker Mayfield, neither of whom missed a single game due to injury in the last four years combined. As such, regular season playing time has been scarce for the former Gator so far and he has logged just 32 offensive snaps to this point. Much of that came in the 2022 season finale against Atlanta, in which the Buccaneers already had their playoff spot locked in and pulled most of their starters before halftime. In all, Trask has completed four of 11 passes for 28 yards.
Trask has seen extensive action in the preseason. He has played in 12 preseason games, starting three, in which he has completed 158 of 254 passes (62.2%) for 1,671 yards, seven touchdowns and six interceptions. Last August, he started two of the Bucs' three preseason games and completed 65.1% of his passes while throwing for three touchdowns and one interception and compiling a passer rating of 91.6.
The Buccaneers now have three players under contract for 2025. In addition to Trask and Mayfield, the Bucs also Michael Pratt, who was re-signed in January after spending his entire rookie season on Tampa Bay's practice squad. Pratt originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft pick out of Tulane by the Green Packers.
