Randy Gregory signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in April but never actually joined the team. That won't change, as the Buccaneers released the veteran edge rusher on Thursday, roughly five months after his signing. Gregory has been on the reserve/did not report list since the start of training camp in July.
The Buccaneers would have been Gregory's fourth NFL team after he spent his first six years in Dallas and a season-and-a-half with Denver before an in-season trade to San Francisco last year. He has played in 72 regular season games with 18 starts, recording 117 tackles and 22.0 sacks. Gregory's combined totals with the Broncos and 49ers in 2023 included 20 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
The move leaves the Buccaneers with nine outside linebackers on their 91-preseason roster: Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Chris Braswell, Anthony Nelson, Markees Watts, Jose Ramirez, Daniel Grzesiak, Shaun Peterson and Jay Person. Last year, the Bucs kept six players at the position after the roster cutdown to 53 for the regular season. The team must make that same cutdown by next Tuesday.
Diaby and Tryon-Shoyinka have ankle and neck injuries, respectively, that have kept them out of action for much of August but both are expected to be ready for the start of the regular season. Against Jacksonville last weekend, Ramirez and Watts combined to record four of the Bucs' five sacks on the night.
