The Tampa Bay Buccaneers dropped a heartbreaker in Week 10, losing 23-20 to the visiting San Francisco 49ers when kicker Jake Moody drilled a 44-yard field goal as time expired. The Buccaneers had tied the game just 41 seconds earlier on Chase McLaughlin's 26-yard field goal following a wild 58-yard drive that included a miraculous fourth-down conversion and three straight defensive penalties that got the ball down to the 49ers' nine-yard line.
Running back Bucky Irving temporarily gave the Buccaneers a 17-13 lead early in the fourth quarter when he took a pitch to the right and dashed between several defenders for a 12-yard touchdown. That marked Irving's fourth rushing touchdown of the season and he is tied with quarterbacks Jayden Daniels of Washington and Bo Nix of Denver for the most rushing scores by a rookie this season.
Third-year running back Rachaad White also found the end zone against the 49ers, catching a short pass over the middle and taking it in for a nine-yard score in the third quarter. That was White's fourth touchdown reception, putting him in a tie for the most in a single season by a Buccaneers running back in franchise history. Charles Sims also had four touchdown catches in 2015. White's nine career touchdown receptions are tied for the second most by a running back in team annals.

In all, Irving and White combined for 157 of the Bucs' 215 yards from scrimmage on Sunday, as the backfield has become the focal point of the team's offense following injuries to Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. On the ground, the Buccaneers produced 110 yards on 27 carries, marking their seventh game with 100-plush rushing yards in 2024, including six of the last seven games. Prior to Monday night's game, the Buccaneers rank 11th in the NFL with 125.3 rushing yards per game and fifth with 4.95 yards per carry. Tampa Bay ranked last in the league in both of those categories in each of the last two seasons and haven't finished in the top 10 in either since 2015, when they were fifth in yards per game and second in yards per carry.
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay's defense stood up strong against the 49ers' rushing attack, which came into the game averaging 159.0 yards per game, fourth in the league, and had 2003 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey making his 2024 debut. The 49ers gained 75 rushing yards on 22 carries, their lowest single-game total of the season, and averaged just 3.4 yards per tote. It was the first time San Francisco failed to hit the 100-yard rushing mark since Week Seven of the 2023 season, in a game against the Minnesota Vikings. The 3.4-yard average was also San Francisco's lowest since a Week 12 game against New Orleans in the 2002 campaign.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 116 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. While his NFL-leading streak of six consecutive games with multiple touchdown passes was snapped, he has still thrown at least one scoring toss in every game this season. He and reigning MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens are the only quarterbacks to throw a touchdown pass in 10 different games so far this season. Mayfield's streak is just one shy of the team record to start a season. Jameis Winston (2019) and Brad Johnson (2003) both had 11-game streaks to start a season.
Mayfield increased his season total to 24 touchdown passes, just four fewer than the career-high 28 he threw last year in his first season with the Buccaneers. Mayfield continues to be at the top of the NFL's touchdown pass list this season, though now he has company in the lead spot.

The Buccaneers defense recorded three sacks of 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy on Sunday, one each by defensive linemen Calijah Kancey and Greg Gaines and outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Kancey missed the first five games of the 2024 season but has recorded four sacks in the five games since his return. Kancey also had two tackles for loss against the 49ers, the third time he's made multiple marks in that category in those five games. He has 17 tackles for loss since entering the NFL last season despite missing eight of a possible 27 contests.
The Buccaneers' defense has produced multiple sacks in each of the last seven outings. After a slow start that saw that crew generate just two sacks over the first three games, it has led the NFL in that category over the last seven weeks.
