5 Bucs to Watch Against the Lions in Week Two

The Buccaneers will travel to Motown to take on the Lions in Week Two. Here are five players to observe

5 Busc to Watch vs Lions

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will return to Ford Field on Sunday, the site of last year's NFC Divisional Round game for a rematch with the Detroit Lions on Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. ET on FOX. The Bucs' Baker Mayfield and the Lions' Jared Goff will face off in another battle of No. 1 overall picks. Both clubs are coming off momentum-building victories in Week One and each will vie to remain atop the NFC hierarchy in 2024. The Bucs will head to Motown for what will surely be a physical competition against Dan Campbell's squad. Here are five Bucs' players to keep an eye on following kickoff:

Jamel Dean

The Lions' Jameson Williams will likely play a significant role in Detroit's 2024 offense. Williams, a 12th overall selection in 2022, recorded five catches for 121 yards and a touchdown against the Rams in Week One. He possesses game-changing long speed and can get separation on vertical routes. Williams excels at post and corner routes with instant gas. For the Buccaneers on the back end, veteran Jamel Dean is the lone survivor after a slew of injuries depleted the secondary depth in Week One. Dean, who has 4.30 40-yard-dash speed to carry deep threats, will be tasked with covering Williams. He is adept at crowding receivers on the boundary and disrupting the catch window. Dean will need to fortify the defense as it works through lineup changes due to a litany of injuries.

Tykee Smith

The Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown became a first-team All-Pro in 2023 after posting career-highs in catches with 119, yards with 1,515 and touchdowns with 10. The versatile receiver has a variety of releases out of the slot in his arsenal and takes advantage in the short-to-intermediate area of the field with leverage. St. Brown can run reverses and sweeps with ease and is lethal on two-way go's. Bucs rookie defensive back Tykee Smith will face the slot weapon throughout the course of the game. At Georgia, Smith made a name for himself by disrupting pass catches underneath and showcased his short-area quickness throughout the Bucs' offseason workout program. He has good route recognition in man and zone and is a physical presence in run defense near the line of scrimmage. On Sunday, Smith could play a pivotal role in containing St. Brown.

SirVocea Dennis

Bucs standout off-ball linebacker Lavonte David is known for being a zone-buster and tight end eraser, and rookie inside linebacker SirVocea Dennis has displayed his coverage abilities early on in the club's 2024 slate. Against the Commanders in Week One, Dennis was brought in on clear passing situations to make an impact. Dennis plays with solid instincts and recognizes blocking schemes. The first-year player nabbed a sack on Jayden Daniels in Week One and he will likely be paired against Lions' Sam LaPorta on Sunday in a one-on-one battle. LaPorta took the NFL by storm in 2023 with a preposterous stat line featuring 86 receptions and 10 touchdowns – the most for a rookie at the position in league archives. He has impressive run-after-catch skills and can stretch the field vertically. LaPorta wins at the point of attack with strength in-line and has stellar footwork and feel on routes. LaPorta has the power to fight through jams at the line of scrimmage and will be a point of emphasis for Todd Bowles' defense on Sunday at Ford Field.

Chris Godwin

Against the Commanders, Chris Godwin became Mayfield's go-to target. He caught eight passes for 83 yards and a four-yard touchdown on a quick out that gave the Bucs a 16-point advantage early in the ballgame. Seven of his eight catches resulted in a first downs and four were third-down conversions. Godwin was physical at the top of his routes and quick out of breaks. He became a weapon over the middle of the field and on out-breakers. The Penn State product showed his RAC-ability off screens and made challenging catches look routine. Godwin creates a favorable matchup on the inside with his physicality against smaller defensive backs. The Lions made many changes to their secondary during the offseason, including the acquisition of Amik Robertson, who is the starter in the slot. At 5-foot-9, 183 pounds, Robertson may not be large in size but plays with swagger and a tough disposition. He totaled four interceptions, and 15 passes defensed over his final two seasons in Las Vegas. Robertson disrupts in press and possesses elite ball skills. Robertson is twitchy and is adept at jumping routes and breaking on throws.

Vita Vea

Much like the secondary, the Bucs' defensive line also took a hit. Calijah Kancey reaggravated his calf last week during practice and missed Week One, as did Logan Hall, who was dealing with a foot ailment. Vita Vea, Tampa Bay's menacing nose tackle, will have to lead the way against the Lions. Vea overwhelms at the point of attack and consistently commands double teams. With rare pursuit skills and a powerful bull rush, Vea sets the tone up front. On Sunday, he will face Lions' center, Frank Ragnow. Detroit has one of the most formidable offensive lines with the likes of Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker, and Ragnow anchors the unit. He has become one of the NFL's premier centers. Since transitioning to center in 2019, Ragnow has never allowed more than two sacks in a season. In a career-high 1,190 snaps at center last season, Ragnow notched a career-best PFF overall grade (88.8) and a career-best PFF run-blocking mark (91.3). Ragnow played a vital role in the Lions' having a top-five rushing attack in 2023 and whichever unit holds up in the trenches will likely determine the outcome of the Week Two contest.
