TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 5-21-24

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On how he's feeling after having a knee procedure last week)

"I'm feeling pretty good right now."

(On if he's using former Head Coach Bruce Arians' golf cart to get around)

"I think that one is mine, but any cart would have done right now. A skateboard would have been great, but they gave me a golf cart."

(On what procedure he had done)

"I had a knee replacement done last Wednesday."

(On if it was his left knee or right knee)

"Left."

(On how tough the recovery has been)

"The first three days after surgery, it was pretty tough. Right now, it's coming around. It's a matter of [physical therapy] and coming around, so it's been doing a lot better."

(On his prognosis for the upcoming season)

"I'll be fine."

(On LT Tristan Wirfs being absent from the first day of OTAs)

"I'm aware that it's voluntary. Me and Tristan had a conversation – plenty of conversations. He's still working out and he's been here all offseason, so I'm comfortable with that."

(On what he's looking for from the team during OTAs)

"It's really a lot. Guys have got to get in shape, guys have got to get the offensive system down, the coaches have got to get used to the players on offense. Obviously, there's new guys on defense, but… They're getting a lot thrown at them early. It's when it slows down for them after about four or five days, that's when I'm really looking for them to make a big jump right now. But, we're putting a lot on them, we're putting a lot in. It's the first time out in this heat and it's not really hot yet. We're looking for mental errors to be down to a minimum and the penalties to be down to a minimum and then just getting familiar with everything. They're seeing a new defense and obviously the defense is seeing a new offense to a degree. Just getting everything down, getting the communication down is really what I'm looking for."

(On what kind of role he expects S Jordan Whitehead to have on this secondary)

"Jordan has been physical when he was here. We watched him in New York and he played the same role there. He's a lot more vocal and a lot more experienced than he was when he left here. Him and 'Win' (Antoine Winfield Jr.) had a great relationship when they were here – they still have one right now. I'm looking for that one to grow. I think it'll help the communication on defense. He was one of our vocal leaders back then. The more people will talk, the better we will be."

(On where TE Cade Otton has shown the most promise over his first two years)

"Durability. His durability has been outstanding. We've called on him a lot as a rookie. It's hard to believe he's only a third-year guy coming up. His durability has been outstanding and he's had different coordinators each year, so his ability to adapt and learn… He's had different coaches, it's not like he's had the same position coach or had the same offensive coordinator. So, to learn different things and tweak his game to fit what we needed him to do is outstanding."

(On NT Vita Vea's reported weight loss during the offseason)

"The last time I saw him, I was very pleased with where he was at. I'd like him to continue what he's doing. I think he's having a great offseason with what he's doing right now and we look for him to come back stronger and faster and quicker and help us win."

(On if he wants Vea to be a more 'dominant' player)

"We've talked about it for a long time. He's finally taking it to heart to where he's really making the strides and the changes necessary for him to be that type of player. We're excited about him coming back and we can't wait to see him."

(On the reasoning for WR Chris Godwin playing outside so much last season)

"He's an inside guy by nature. He can play outside, but he can make a living inside doing a bunch of things for us. We plan to let him do a lot of things that he does best. He was coming off the injury last year, so I don't know if he was at full tilt inside or outside, but he looks a lot quicker, a lot lighter, and he's healthier now. He's eager to learn and get the offense down, so we're just excited to have him out on the field."

(On what he's seen from Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen's new offense)

"The precision is the big thing – everybody being on the same page and understanding. It's like a string – all 11 guys have to be on the same page, all 11 guys have got to have a great understanding of what the defense is doing and what they have to do off of it. We're building that and we're getting there. This is the first time it was full speed for everybody and there were some plays that were successful and some plays we'd like to have back. It's a process and it's him getting to know them and them getting to know him. It's been good so far."

(On QB Baker Mayfield being present during the entire offseason program)

"'Bake' has been great. He's eager, he's hungry – all of the guys are. They're just ready to get started."

(On the biggest challenges with going up against Liam Coen's offense)

"I can't giveaway game plans that'll stop us, guys [laughs]. That makes no sense. He has a very wide variety of plays that he can do from certain formations. It's not just the same thing. The action may look the same, but the play may not be the same and the tweaks and the adjustments off of it [are] very difficult and complex that way. That's what we've got to get down, offensively."

(On Coen saying he will provide multiple play calls at a single time and it will be up to QB Baker Mayfield to determine which call is the correct one for the situation)

"Most quarterbacks do that. They get about five or six plays and they've got to pick the right play to call. Baker has been in the offense before and he's a very bright guy. Him and Liam hit it off from the start, so we trust Baker to make the right call."

(On what he's seen from Sua Opeta at the left guard position)

"He's strong and he's faster than I thought he was. In shorts and a t-shirt, everybody looks good, so to speak, but we like what [Ben] Bredeson brings to the table, as well. It's going to be a tough training camp for that spot."

(On the biggest impact of potentially having three new starters in the secondary)

"Just getting used to each other. I consider Zyon [McCollum] a starter because he started nine games last year. Jordan [Whitehead] has been here before, so we just got him back to plug in. The communication has got to build up. [Jamel] Dean is smarter, [Antoine] Winfield Jr. is obviously smarter, Zyon is smarter – those guys and the way they work out together off the field and the way they communicate on the field, you look for that to cause more turnovers with understanding what each other does."
