OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR DAVE CANALES
(On if QB Kyle Trask is getting more first-team practice reps this week)
"Absolutely. We love to make sure that he's prepared. You never know what's going to happen. Baker [Mayfield] has been a warrior and battled through. We've got to make sure both guys are ready to play. Baker is there kind of going through some of our progressions – it was our big third-down day today – so we're making sure he's ready. He was right there after every period [and] Baker and Kyle and I [would] go through the plan."
(On if quarterbacks are getting the ball out quickly versus Philadelphia)
"I can't really speak to their production and their pass rush and all of that, but I think it's always a good plan. They have such a great front, it's always a good plan to stay rhythmic and stay under that three second [mark], which is what we try to do. Sometimes we have to go for it, but I think it's a smart way to attack this defense – especially with the amount of really good players they have up front."
(On what he's seen from QB Baker Mayfield in practice this week)
"I think it was a similar rhythm [to last week], trying to make sure we get him as healthy as possible by gameday. It's a very similar rhythm to what we did last week."
(On how much of Mayfield's performance last week was due to being hurt)
"Let's give credit where credit is due. [Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator] Ejiro Evero has done a fantastic job against us. In general this year – if you look at some of their numbers – defensively, he's put a good unit together. Really tough. That front seven is really tough to play against. They've got great secondary players. They really presented some challenges to us. The first time we played them, neither of us had a quarter of it, with the elements of it and all that. They did a great job, they had a great plan. It was windy – that affected some of the things. I thought we had a chance for Mike [Evans] on a big touchdown early on – the ball kind of got hung up [in the wind] a little bit. As far as the rest of it, we have to be accountable to executing and throwing and catching – which we didn't do [very well] last week – but we found a way to win, which I was excited about."
(On how to prevent Philadelphia's defensive line from controlling the game)
"I don't want to get into the specifics of the gameplan, but that's a fact – they're really stout inside and they've got good players behind the first group, even, on their defensive front. We have to be aware of that, we have to make concessions for it and try to attack them in different ways. Again, that was really early in the season – we kind of really grew and evolved into this offense that we are now. Now, the plan is to just get back into our rhythm of our pass game – we've been kind of hit-and-miss the last couple of weeks. Again, playing division opponents is rough. Whether it's the Saints, the Falcons, or the Panthers, they've done a fantastic job of playing against us. Getting another chance to play the Eagles is something we're excited about, with a different approach to how we play the game and what we've become over the course of the season."
(On if having LG Aaron Stinnie in the lineup in place of LG Matt Feiler presents a different look for Philadelphia, as well)
"Yeah, could be."
(On QB Baker Mayfield's varying statistical performances)
"It's a great question. If you look at the through the course of the season, we've had games like this where we kind of lost our rhythm and we found a way to work through it. For me, again, it's going right back to the basics and the details – the route depth, the timing of the throws, where are our eyes at in our progressions? Continuing to fine-tune those details to get one week better. I'm really hoping that we can find that stride again this week against an opponent that's going to see a little bit of a different flavor. Of course, they've got all the film to look at, but…I'm pushing and striving for the highest version of what I have for Baker in my mind and the things that he's capable of – taking us down, end-of-half, end-of-game, type of things. I'm always going to go there, but at the same time, we have just addressed some of the little technical details that need to continue to be polished up this late in the season."
(On if he's talked with former Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll)
"I just sent him a text – a whole lot of love, a lot of appreciation [and] just gratitude, really. I just wanted to send him some love in this situation [and] give him some time to really process it all. I'm sure it happened pretty quickly. I'm looking forward to having a chance to connect with him and kind of see where he's at and what he's looking for in the future, but I don't have any information [right now]."
(On if he thinks Carroll will be successful wherever he goes next)
"No doubt in my mind. No doubt. He believes in himself, first and foremost. He puts a lot of trust and a lot of belief in his staff and his players. I think that he can go and coach anywhere at the highest level, still. Just watching him from afar this year, it didn't seem like he's lost a step at all. I'm really excited to see what happens here going forward for him, because if I know him, he's always competing. He's always going to try to push the envelope for what the next thing is. I'm excited for that."
(On the Carolina Panthers requesting permission to interview him for their head coaching vacancy)
"It is surreal to me. I'm really grateful because I honestly can't do this without the guys in this building – without the talent that we have on our offense, an amazing staff that's just worked their tails off to put us in a situation to win the division. When I think about it, it's like, 'Okay, well the coordinator gets all the heat and you get all the praise. It's really a bigger story than that.' I'm really grateful. It's something I've been thinking about for a really long time, so I have some stuff prepared, but I really haven't had time to look at that this week with a formidable opponent like the Eagles that are coming in here. It's going to require all of us – all of me – to really be locked in. We'll play Monday night and we'll take it from there. At some point, I'll have a conversation with them and I'll be really excited and fired up to say the same things we've been talking about here – about building a team that plays championship type of football from the minute you get there."
(On why the deep shots against the Panthers didn't work out)
"A lot of factors. I think we've talked about it – it was definitely windy, the wind was for sure a factor. Protection – there were some protection issues on a couple. At the end of the day, whatever the situation, whatever the conditions are, we've just got to find a way to make those plays."
(On what he's learned about WR Mike Evans this year that he didn't know beforehand)
"He's got a lot of film out there, I think. People have been watching him for a long time. The best I can sum it up is just this football IQ that's unbelievable. The way that he makes himself available in double coverage and triple coverage, consistently, when they're pushing somebody back there to him. He always finds a way to beat the leverage of the secondary, the leverage of maybe an inside linebacker trying to help out. And then he's just an ultimate competitor – he's exactly what you want. He's the guy that, whatever the stakes are, whatever the score is, he's still striving to be his best. He's still striving to score, to get open. You look at the last time we played the Eagles, we finally got something going late in the game and we hit Chris [Godwin] close down on the goal line and the next thing you know, we're popping up a ball to Mike and he's like, 'Guys, I'm ready to go, I'll find a way to score.' Just for the whole game, watching him battle, watching him continue to compete on every single down."
(On Philadelphia's secondary having a statistically poor season, but still having talented players)
"Our focus is us. If we look at us for the last couple of weeks, we haven't played to the standard that we've set for ourselves. We've had a couple of really, really good passing games, mixed with the runs. My focus goes right to us – guys, we've got to get back to our rhythm. If we can do that, then it exposes some advantages in the secondary, then great. But, it's not a focus on any particular person in their secondary or any of that. Really, the focus is on us. Let's find that rhythm, let's call the plays that we know, in the right situations, and let our guys go execute."
(On the one thing Tampa Bay has to do to beat Philadelphia)
"Score more points than the other team."
(On how important a fast start is)
"You love coming out, especially with our defense and the aggressive style that we play with. You guys see it – it really can be a frenzy on defense when they start finding the ball. We had a couple of games where we really get that momentum going. I know that we're a big part of that, so I would love to. I would love to get out right off the bat and be in our rhythm, mixing our plays like we do, so that we can put that ball in our defense's court so we can be aggressive and play the type of defense that we know they can. They've been really carrying us for the last couple of games, so I'd love that."
(On how mindful he has to be of QB Baker Mayfield's injuries when he's calling plays)
"We've got to definitely see what his mobility is like. We've got a couple of days left to see how he moves around, and that definitely will play a factor in terms of the types of plays that are called. In a perfect world, I'd like to say that he gives me the thumbs up – alright, he's good – it's an open playbook and we can just call our offense. I'll be aware of that as we go through it."
(On if he's noticed any schematic differences from Philadelphia since changing defensive playcallers)
"A couple of wrinkles. I don't want to get too much into it, but I respect Matt Patricia for sure and the history that he has – the breadth of defense, the understanding, the situational stuff. All of those things are so second nature for him. I have a really good challenge, in that regard."
(On if he's more concerned about QB Baker Mayfield's ankle or ribs)
"Both a concern – both have been a concern. We've gone into games before – Buffalo, we went into that with a little bit of a knee deal that happened there. So, [it is] definitely in the back of my mind, but at the same time, we've got to go. This is the only one we've got. Baker wouldn't want it any other way. He's like, 'Shoot, just call it man. Go for it. I'll make it happen.' He's handled these situations the right way with that aggressive mentality."
(On how QB Baker Mayfield looked today and if he looked better than he did last week)
"Definitely, with the ribs. He did – he looked better. I don't want to get too much into all of that, though."
(On if this is a game where he is going to empty the playbook)
"I try to come out of every game having called our favorite plays. We'll go through it as a staff and with the players. It's every game – it all depends on the looks of the defense and what we're trying to attack that will make some of those things come to life. Definitely, there's no holding back at this point. There's no setup for the following week. Let's go. Hopefully I can take that approach again."
(On how much he'd like to have another season with QB Baker Mayfield)
"I'd love to be in Tampa for a long time. I know, whatever our plans are for the future, Baker has been unbelievable. For whatever job that I may get credited for, Baker – the belief in himself, his ability to really bring a team together, to grow, to own his growth, to own his mistakes – I just love that kind of guy. I love being around him. Every week that we get – and I can't miss today – this is way into January, this is a Thursday, these are the hardest practices of the week, this day. I just can't lose sight of how cool it is to do life with these men. As we all know, in our profession, no team is ever the same from one year to the next. It hasn't happened for me in 14 years – there [are] changes that happen, there are hard decisions that have to happen all over the board. From every single player on the offensive side to the guys I get to encounter on the defense, I'm really just trying to cherish these moments. To be able to go to the playoffs 11 out of 14 years, I'm so fortunate, so lucky to be able to have that reality. I'm really just trying to enjoy this week with the guys."
(On how much QB Baker Mayfield's camaraderie with teammates translates to on-field chemistry)
"It's just handling the highs and the lows. I think when you have relationships, you weather those storms better, when you have each other's back and there's no finger pointing and we're all pulling in the same direction. That's where it goes. Then, when you have those great moments, the celebrations are that much sweeter, they're that much more poignant when the guys come together and they have this relationship to lean off of."
(On WR Mike Evans being named second-team All-Pro)
"First team, second team, whatever it is, the recognition is amazing. I think it speaks, again, to a guy that's competitive, that goes after it every single day [and] gives us an opportunity to win whenever we're out there. He gives us something for the defense to draw their attention to so we can make other things come to life. I've been really blessed to have Mike in my first time calling plays, to know that this guy is going to make a play for us at some point and to really give us a focal point of what we build. It's been a blessing and I'm really proud of him and his accomplishment and being recognized by everybody as one of the best players in the NFL."
PASS GAME COORDINATOR/INSIDE LINEBACKERS COACH LARRY FOOTE
(On the differences he sees in the Philadelphia Eagles since the last meeting in Week 3)
"They've just hit a rough patch, but they've still got that big offensive line, they've still got Jalen Hurts, [they've] got great running backs. I've got a ton of respect for [D'Andre] Swift – the more I've [studied] him this week, this guy is special. He is elite, so it's going to be a big challenge, but we know this team likes to run the ball and ran it for 200 yards on us. That's their identity and we're going to have to do a better job if we want to win."
(On the defense delivering a shutout in Week 18 to clinch the NFC South division title)
"We made a lot of big plays. Guys stepped up. The special teams [unit] was great, of course, [with] three field goals – it was windy. We knew Baker [Mayfield] wasn't 100%, but he was going to give us all he had. Guys just played together and made some special plays. Everybody knows about [Antoine] Winfield's play. [It was a] big victory on the road."
(On S Antoine Winfield Jr. earning first-team All-Pro honors)
"Yes, he did. He's got the stats. He is a superstar, everybody knows that. I told him, I said, 'Something good came from being snubbed. Everybody was talking about it. If you would've just made the Pro Bowl, your name wouldn't have been out there all over the airwaves during the games and stuff.' It worked out in his favor."
(On what having Winfield Jr. in the secondary does for the defense)
"Just confidence – when Winfield is out there, everybody is confident. He can make special plays, he did that twice. I'm teaching my kids – don't ever quit on a play. He just breathes confidence. When he is back there, everybody is just more confident [and] ready to go. And, of course, he gives us a good chance of winning."
(On Winfield Jr. making more plays than just the touchdown-saving forced fumble)
"He's all over the field. He's all over the field and it's time for him to be grandfathered into all of those accolades [laughs]. He is having a special season. I was reading something with his stats and that's pretty impressive – when you start being one of the only in the history of the league, you're doing something right. He comes from good stock – everybody knows that."
(On Eagles QB Jalen Hurts' ability to extend plays)
"That's a big challenge for us. Everybody can be doing their technique perfectly sound, [with] the right call, but he can extend plays. That makes it difficult. We've got to sometimes cover for six-or-seven seconds. That's what the league has turned into. He's strong, too – he's not just fast and elusive, he's strong, so we're going to have to do a good job plastering and getting him down."
(On if having young players on the defense brings a different energy at this time of year compared to having an older team)
"You've seen that this year. Even back in spring, after the draft and free agency, you [saw] a new crop of guys coming in and a different energy. I love watching [those] guys. I just stand back and stare at them and you just see that continuity. It's just building, that brotherly love. All of the young guys, they feed off of each other. And the older guys [are] feeding off of them. Lavonte David seeing the energy and the juice that [those] guys bring, especially Yaya [Diaby], Jose [Ramirez] – they're always trying to fight in the hallway. Our meetings are a little late because those guys are hanging out together in the hallways, but that's good. That's what you want."
(On it being a good week for him with the University of Michigan winning the College Football Playoff National Championship)
"A great week – we've got to keep it going."
SAFETY ANTOINE WINFIELD JR.
(On when he found out he made First-Team All-Pro)
"So, I found out yesterday. I was really just doing an interview, they kind of threw me off, and at the end of the interview he was [like], 'Oh, you're named first team All-Pro' and I'm like, 'Wow.' That's how they got the little reaction that's on social media, so it was awesome to find out that way."
(On his dad's reaction to him being named AP First-Team All-Pro)
"Oh, he was happy. He was happy. Yeah, I texted him in a group message and he called me instantly. We talked about it and he was just congratulating me."
(On if he feels a different vibe amongst his teammates going into playoffs)
"Yeah, 100%, because we know it's win or go home. It's the real deal now, so it's time to lock in and go make this run."
(On if he had a feeling they would see the Philadelphia Eagles during the playoffs)
"Yeah, 100%, we kind of all did. We were like, okay, these guys are good, we will probably see them again in the playoffs, and now we're here. Now it's time to go."
(On what gave him the conviction they would play the Philadelphia Eagles again in playoffs)
"A lot of ups and downs, but you know, you [have] to have faith. We put it together to put us in this position right now, so we just have to make sure we go ahead and take care of business."
(On being named First-Team All-Pro over other safeties in the NFL)
"It's a blessing. You know, the safeties, they had an incredible year. Kyle Hamiliton, Jessie Bates, and it's an honor to named First-Team All-Pro, because that's great competition right there, so it's an honor."
(On QB Jalen Hurts)
"He's a dual threat quarterback. You know, he's good at getting out the pocket and still making those elite throws, so that's what's so special about him. His ability to escape the pocket, see what's down field, and make a play."
