Each week during the regular season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' communications department publishes a "Game Release" to aid the media in coverage of their upcoming game. Within that release are a number of documents regarding the player roster, including a depth chart, which lists the pecking order at every position on offense, defense and special teams.

Each game week, we will be taking a closer look at that depth chart, pointing out any changes or relevant notes from the previous game. Let's start on offense. Rookies are marked with an asterisk. Players we will be discussing in depth are highlighted in bold text.

The Buccaneers started their Week 17 game against Carolina in "21" personnel, with both Rachaad White and Bucky Irving in the backfield. That marked the first time that Irving had started a game in which White also played. Irving's only other start this season came at New Orleans in Week Six when White was out due to injury. Against the Panthers, logged 42 offensive snaps to 28 for White and led the team with a career-high 190 yards from scrimmage. White had 30 yards on six carries and one four-yard catch. Running back Sean Tucker also got 15 snaps and turned them into eight carries for 39 yards and one five-yard reception.

Quarterback Kyle Trask saw action for the fourth time this season but did not throw a pass. With the Bucs up 48-14 late in the fourth quarter, Trask took over for Baker Mayfield on the last drive and executed eight handoffs before kneeling three times to kill the clock.

With Cade Otton sidelined for a second straight game due to a knee injury, Payne Durham once again took on the lead role at tight end, playing 59 of a possible 77 snaps and catching two passes for 36 yards and his first career touchdown. Rookie tight end Devin Culp saw his most activity of the season, drawing 20 offensive snaps and recording three receptions for 52 yards, the first catches of his career.

Rookie wide receiver Kameron Johnson, just off of injured reserve, played for the first time since Week Five and was on the field for seven snaps, one of which involved him taking an end-around for 11 yards. Fellow rookie wideout Jalen McMillan continued to become more and more involved in the offense, in this case seeing the most snaps (53) of any of the team's receivers and scoring two touchdowns to give him six in the last four games.

Safety Jordan Whitehead came back from injured reserve the day before Sunday's game against the Panthers and not only immediately stepped back into a starting role but also played every defensive snap. He had three tackles in the game. Kaevon Merriweather started at the other safety spot but logged just 11 defensive snaps while Mike Edwards had 41. With Christian Izien now on injured reserve and the Panthers playing much of the game in "11" personnel, rookie Tykee Smith was in for most of the game as the slot corner. Smith played 41 of the Bucs' 47 defensive snaps and had three tackles, one for a loss.

K.J. Britt returned to action after missing three games due to an ankle injury, but second-year man J.J. Russell continued to start at linebacker next to Lavonte David. Russell finished with 28 defensive plays to 17 for Britt. Veteran linebacker Deion Jones, who had been elevated from the practice squad to make his Buccaneers debut on Sunday, saw action only on special teams.

After playing nearly every defensive snap in Week 16 at Dallas, defensive lineman Calijah Kancey got a bit more of a break against the Panthers, logging 29 of a possible 47 snaps. He still had one of the Buccaneers' five sacks in the game, increasing his team-leading total to 7.5. Anthony Nelson played the most snaps of the team's outside linebackers, with 31, and also had one of those five sacks.

Rookie Jack Browning handled the Bucs' punting duties for the fourth game in a row, but this was the first time he was on the active roster after being elevated from the practice squad each of the previous three weeks. He was only called upon to punt once but hit a high 52-yarder that was fair caught for a 52-yard net.

Outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka only played five snaps on special teams but one was a big one, as he blocked a third-quarter punt attempt by Johnny Hekker, the Bucs' first blocked punt in four seasons. Russell, who played 15 special teams snaps, picked up the loose ball and returned it 23 yards to the house, scoring the Bucs' first blocked punt return for a touchdown in 12 years.

Tight end Ko Kieft, who also played 20 snaps on offense, was the team's most active special teams player. He was on the field for 26 of the Bucs' snaps in the kick-and-coverage game. As noted above, Jones made his debut for the Bucs with nine special teams snaps and had the team's only kick-coverage tackle in the game.

The Buccaneers also added Johnson to their depth chart as a possibility at both punt and kickoff return.
