HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On P Jake Camarda)
"Jake was huge – from the kickoffs in the end zone to the punts and him booming them. He was getting them to the sideline, as well. That was about as big for us as anybody yesterday. He had a heck of a ballgame."
(On S Ryan Neal)
"Ryan is getting a good feel now. We're understanding what his strengths are and he's understanding what we expect of him. I thought he had a very active ballgame yesterday – he's only going to get better from there. I think the closer he is, the better he plays. We know he can play back deep, but he can do some things like a linebacker up front, so we've got to start tapping into that."
(On running on third-and-goal from the 4-yard line to get a touchdown)
"That was all [Dave] Canales right there – all the credit goes to him. They had a two-high [safety] look and we checked to something that made it a little vulnerable in the box. He believed in them. The line did a good job and Rachaad [White] ran hard."
(On what he saw from the rushing attack yesterday)
"They got better. Like I said, we're going to do whatever we have to do to win the game. I'm not sitting here saying we're hellbent on getting 150 yards rushing a game. We rushed it efficiently – that's what we're looking for, that's what we got. We'll break some, and some games, we may not. It helps us win ballgames and keep time of possession. It was good."
(On the team being better at converting on third downs in Week 2 compared to Week 1)
"They were giving [Baker Mayfield] time to throw. They were giving him time to throw, the receivers got open and we had a good third-down plan. Offensive guys did a great job this week executing the gameplan."
(On if he thought the open-field tackling was better this week)
"No, that's not how I saw it, but we've got some things to clean up there. We made some tackles, we missed a few that we can get better at – leaving our feet too early. We're getting better."
(On getting two big third-and-long conversions to WR Mike Evans)
"I don't think anything is different. We're not comparing to last year, as far as we're concerned in the building. We had coverages we saw and that we liked and they gave [Baker Mayfield] time to throw and he made some good connections with Mike. That really worked for us this ballgame."
(On if QB Baker Mayfield is showing his experience as a fifth-year player)
"Yeah, exactly. He's been through a lot in five years – he's been through ups and downs. He knows it's not about him, it's about the team. He's been very smart with the football, obviously, for the most part – he got away with one early but he's been very good with the football. If you don't turn it over, you give yourself a chance – that's important. You have to take chances, but you can't turn it over as well and he's been doing a great job at that."
(On the offense slowing down in the fourth quarter)
"We didn't execute and they made some plays. They're going to make some plays, we've just got to finish ballgames. We finished the ballgame out. They had been playing great the whole game – they stalled a little bit but the defense bailed them out. They bailed the defense out some, as well, so it was a good team win."
(On how the offense can improve in the red zone)
"We shot ourselves in the foot. It was one guy here or there – we've got to get better there. We can't have [the drives turn into] three [points]. Going deeper into the season, we've got to get seven points there or we're not going to be able to pull those games out if we don't."
(On if the team will look at outside help at running back with a potential injury to RB Chase Edmonds)
"We're good with what we have right now."
(On if CB Carlton Davis III could play this week)
"It's probably a little early to tell right now."
(On the team's ability to stop the run through two weeks)
"I think the guys are sacrificing for each other. We know what our formula is to win on defense: stop the run and force them to be one dimensional and get turnovers if we can. That's been good [through] two weeks, so far – we've still got some things to sure up there. I'm not saying we've arrived because we definitely have not but it's a good start."
(On defensive linemen Logan Hall and Mike Greene)
"I think they're coming into their own. They played hard yesterday. They got off the ball, led by Vita [Vea]. Vita did some great things to free the other two guys up. I think Logan is finding his niche and Mike is playing good football right now. If they keep getting along like that, hopefully about mid-season, we should hit our stride."
(On so many different players contributing to Sunday's win)
"It's a credit to the guys preparing for the game, really, and the coaches getting them ready on both sides of the ball, as well as special teams. It's good to see that we can get it in different areas. During a 17-game season, you're going to have to win different ways. It's going to have to come from different people so we're going to have to continue that."
(On the rotation at outside linebacker to try and keep guys fresh)
"It was a warm day, so we needed to get guys in and out of there, so we were trying to rotate pretty [well]. That was one of the spots we could afford to rotate and we did."
(On NT Vita Vea playing a lot of snaps on Sunday)
"He's grown into a great leadership role. He got off the ball yesterday, quite a few times. He had a heck of a ballgame. He kind of closed down the middle of the field for us. He got pressure in the passing game. His stamina as he continues to run, for a guy that size, is still really unbelievable to look at. He plays hard, he plays tough and he's our anchor."
(On starting off 2-0 and if it shows that this team is a complete team and not just a team centered around one player)
"Even when we had [Tom Brady], it was a team full of winners, so it's no different for us. We don't feel any differently in the building. We set our own expectations and that's what we go by. I think the minute you start performing to other people's expectations, you start letting yourself down and letting everybody else down. We have belief in this building, we have confidence in this building. We've had winners in this building the past few years – that has not changed. The people have changed but that has not changed. We're continuing to do that."
(On the roster turnover and relying on so many young players)
"Them being able to learn and attention to detail, the coaches being able to get the information to them – it's a group effort here. We don't win alone, we don't lose alone. I think those guys – I told you they could play before. The good thing with having young legs, they can practice every day. Older guys, you have to rest more. They're eager, they're very good football players. We've just got to give them the right information."
(On going up against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football)
"[It is a] very talented team, very well-coached. Like you said, they were in the Super Bowl last year. We've been in that situation. They've got talent at every level on both sides of the ball. We're going to have to use everybody to try and win this ballgame. It's not going to come from one or two groups, it's going to have to be individual play, it's going to have to be group play. We're going to have to be very sound."
(On NT Vita Vea saying that practice squad WR Cephus Johnson III serving as Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields in practice was helpful during last week)
"He was perfect last week, as far as Justin Fields is concerned. He's played quarterback, so it really helped us. He got us in a lot of situations and got us ready and got a realistic look at it. Obviously, he can't be Justin, but he was close to it. He got everybody on alert as far as taking the ball and running and scrambling with it and making sure our rush lanes were fine."
(On if Johnson will do that again as Eagles QB Jalen Hurts this week)
"A little bit. They're different type of players. A little bit. They both can run and throw, so we'll see."
(On what his message to the team was after Sunday's win)
"It was a good win. You enjoy it – 24-hour rule – then forget about it. We've got a big game Monday night, [so] we've just got to get ready for that one."
(On how it's been working with Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales despite not having any relationship with him prior to his hiring)
"I don't think you have to know anybody to know football. If you know football and you know what you're doing, you can get a feel for people real quick. Dave is doing a great job. It's Week 2, we've got a lot of room to grow on offense, we've got a lot of room to grow all the way around. We've won two ballgames. We know it can go south [really] quick. I think he's doing a very good job week-to-week going in there. Our job is to score more points than the other team and we've done that for two weeks."
CORNERBACK ZYON MCCOLLUM
(On stepping up after CB Carlton Davis III's injury)
"I just had a really good week of preparation, met with a lot of our coaches, and got comfortable with the game plan. For me, it was a good week of preparation. The thing I've been doing in the past is thinking out there, and so if I go out there and think then what is the point of preparing. I went out there [and] wasn't think, just playing."
(On how practicing against WR Mike Evans has prepared him)
"It's huge going up against Mike, 'C.G.' (Chris Godwin), and a lot of those guys. [Also] Baker [Mayfield] and Kyle [Trask] competing all camp, so we're going to get their best every day, and that just prepares me and makes me know that the best competition is at practice, so when I go out on gameday, it should be a little it easier than what it is every day in practice."
(On where he is at confidence wise)
"I feel absolutely amazing confidence wise, especially going in. I knew this was a big game for me, [so] I just put pressure on myself to say [to myself], your career can go one of two ways, and this game is a really defining moment for me, especially, being the first start of my second year. So, I just took it and I ran with it. Me, athletically, I was always think of myself as bigger, stronger, and faster than any receiver that I'll ever line up against, and this was just [about] truly believing that. Just knowing at the end of the day it's me versus them, and I'm going to bet on myself every time."
(On how special it will be playing against his twin brother, Eagles DB Tristin McCollum)
"It's absolutely incredible. This is the thing we were dreaming of when we were in elementary school and middle school, and we both [wanted] to play football. Growing up, our favorite team was the Eagles, and him having a chance to play for the Eagles. [With] us going head to head, the phone calls are definitely hilarious. I'm sure the banter around his locker room is the same as mine. The twins are going to reunite and it's a big night for the McCollum family for sure."
(On the sacrifices his mom had to make as a single mother)
"She worked super super hard to put us in [this] position, being a single a mom, and raising two twins. [With] us having dreams and aspirations and her just all alone wondering what she can do to get us in this position, she instilled a lot of values in us that caused us to kind of learn and teach ourselves. Us growing up, we just want to return the favor to her and let her know how much it really means to us for her to just always be there for us unconditionally."
TIGHT END CADE OTTON
(On what the win was like for the team yesterday)
"It's super satisfying to see the work everyone puts in in practice, in the film room, and throughout camp, throughout the weeks in the season, and to see it show up on gameday, I think that's the best feeling and then obviously to come out with the win on top of that. We're just continuing to grow together, continuing to jell, and to get wins on top of that is awesome. We feel really good about where we are at right now."
(On what it's like preparing for the Philadelphia Eagles)
"Yeah, I haven't dove into it much yet, but just on its face, Monday Night Football against the defending NFC champs, you know, we're going to have to bring our A-game, rise to the occasion. They have a really good defense, so we are going to have to prepare hard, execute every play, and we're super excited for the opportunity."
(On how he would assess his performance against the Bears)
"I felt good. It was a game where we knew they were going to kind of play deep, and so some of the check downs would be there for us, so I was ready for when Baker [Mayfield] needed me to make the plays and try to get as many yards as I could. It's always fun to catch the ball, but it's also fun because we stuck with the run all game just to wear them down. We will just keep going as a team and just continue to work until we're able to put the game away."
(On making the decision to play without gloves)
"It was on Tuesday I brought my gloves out to practice, and realized I brought two left handed gloves, and I was like, 'alright' and just threw them to the side. Throughout practice, I just felt good catching the ball, so I did it again the next day [and] it felt good again, so I felt like going back to it. It felt good."
(On playing a lot of snaps through the first two weeks)
"It's a great challenge. I try to take pride in never asking to come out of the game, so it's one of those things [where] you have to refocus every single play, just focus on that next rep and what you have to do to win it. That's really all I'm thinking about in the moment and then however many plays I play at the end of the game, it is what it is."
(On RB Rachaad White)
"It's been super fun coming in with Rachaad, seeing his ability right off the bat, and the more opportunities he's gotten throughout the time we've been here. I think we still have a lot to work on in the run game and in the red zone. Just to get a taste of that finishing in the end zone with the ball in the Rachaad's hands, we definitely need to keep doing that and we are going to keep working at it."
