Baker Mayfield, Bucky Irving, Sean Tucker and Rachaad White all had touchdown runs on Sunday at MetLife Stadium as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers vaulted out of their bye week with a 30-7 win over the New York Giants. That marked the first time that the Buccaneers have had four different players score a rushing touchdown in the same game.
The Buccaneers snapped a four-game losing streak and sent the Giants to their sixth straight defeat. Tampa Bay improved to 5-6 on the season and moved them to within one game of the idle Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South. New York dropped to 2-9. The Bucs hope to go on a post-bye run like they did in 2020 and the lopsided win in East Rutherford was a good start.
"It's good concentration," said Head Coach Todd Bowles. "The guys focused on the little things; for the most part we executed on both sides of the football. I'd still like to finish the game a little bit better but they came back [from the bye] mentally tougher and they came back ready to play."
Added Mayfield: "Just the focus. We talked about it, getting away for the bye, getting away from it for a little bit and come back ready to roll. Play it one week at a time. Offensively we did that for three quarters for the most part. That was the focus and the energy that we needed to play complementary football."
Even with all of the scores coming on the ground, Mayfield was masterful for the Buccaneers, throwing for 294 of the team's 450 total net yards on 24 of 30 passing. He also scrambled for multiple first downs in addition to his 10-yard touchdown run that ended with a dive over a defender into the end zone. He did suffer a stinger trying to recover a fumbled handoff in the fourth quarter but was able to stay in the game and execute a series of handoffs. The Giants came into the game ranked first in the NFL in sacks per pass play on defense but did not sack Mayfield once, speaking both to the protection afforded the quarterback and Mayfield's own elusiveness.
"He did a heck of a job," said Bowles of Mayfield. "Baker just plays ball. He loves playing ball. He had some great scrambles. He bought some time, he made some runs. He played a heck of a ballgame."
Mayfield really spread the ball around, completing passes to 11 different players to tie a Buccaneers single-game record. That had only been accomplished four previous times in team history. WR Mike Evans caught five passes for 68 yards in his much-anticipated return from a hamstring injury and also drew an end zone pass interference call that led to White's touchdown. Irving caught six passes for 64 yards and recorded 151 yards from scrimmage, including a 56-yard run in the fourth quarter that tied for the Bucs' longest this season. Five different players, including WR Rakim Jarrett and TE Payne Durham, made catches of 25 or more yards.
"I think when Mike was hurt it got him to trust a lot of the other guys," said Bowles. "So now with Mike back he can spread it around easier and not having to think about and look at who's there. Everybody understands what they're doing, so everybody's in synch."
Meanwhile, the Giants started second-year fan favorite Tommy DeVito after benching Daniel Jones earlier in the week and announcing that the veteran passer would be released. DeVito won three of his six starts for New York as a rookie but had trouble sustaining drives on Sunday, particularly in the first half. DeVito did direct some sustained drives in the second half and finished the game with 189 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions on 21-of-31 passing. The Buccaneers sacked DeVito four times, one each by DLs Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea, plus one by OLB Anthony Nelson and one by S Antoine Winfield Jr.
DeVito did run the ball seven times for 32 yards, including a 17-yard scamper to the Bucs' one-yard line in the fourth quarter that set up a Devin Singletary touchdown run to avoid the shutout.
S Christian Izien led the Buccaneers with 10 tackles and LB Lavonte David added five stops, a passed defensed and a forced fumble. David's forced fumble led to the Buccaneers' only takeaway and ended a Giants drive that had reached Tampa Bay's five-yard line in the third quarter. Tampa Bay completely gained the momentum back after taking the ensuing drive 95 yards for their last touchdown. CB Jamel Dean made his return from injured reserve and contributed two tackles and the first forced fumble of his career.

The Buccaneers dominated the first half and took a 23-0 lead into the intermission. The visitors picked up 290 yards of offense to just 45 for the home team and had a 17-3 edge in first downs. The Giants did not convert a third or fourth down in the half and had just 10 net passing yards thanks in part to three sacks. The Giants did not cross into Buccaneers territory until five minutes were left in the second quarter, and they only ran three plays on Tampa Bay's half of the field. It marked the first time this season that the Bucs pitched a first-half shutout.
New York came out in the second half and mounted its first sustained drive, before David knocked the ball out of Tyrone Tracy's hands on a first-and-goal sweep. Kancey recovered and the Bucs' resulting touchdown drive essentially ended any thoughts of a Giants comeback.
"We come out in the second half and the defense gets a turnover," said Mayfield. "You put together a 95-yard drive – that's huge. That's complementary football. That's big-time. That's what we've been looking for. It's good to see and now we've just got to build on it."
The Buccaneers got the ball first after a game-opening touchback put the ball at the 30. After an incompletion, WR Sterling Shepard took a tunnel screen and cut behind one block to get seven yards. WR Jalen McMillan ran a quick curl down the right seam and caught an 11-yard pass for a first down. A nine-yard out to Evans got nine more and put the ball in Giants territory, but the Bucs' first run of the game, by White was stopped for a loss of one. Mayfield used a timeout before the third-down play with the play clock nearing zero, then took a shotgun snap and handed off to White, who bounced into a seam to the left and got seven to the Giants' 37. A quick middle screen to Irving two plays later left the Bucs one yard shy of another first down, and it took two Tucker runs, the second one getting three, to move the chains again. Two plays later, White hurdled a defender at the end of an eight yard run that made it first down at the 15. Irving weaved through traffic on a screen pass to get the ball to within inches of the goal line. The Bucs brought in 350-pound nose tackle Vita Vea to play fullback and he led the way for Tucker to finish the drive with a one-yard touchdown run.
The Giants also started at their 30 after a touchback and Tracy knifed over right guard to break free for a 16-yard gain. Tracy's next run only got one, and a designed run by DeVito didn't fool Vea, who spun him down at the 48. DeVito's first attempt to pass never got off, as Kancey got up the middle quickly and buried him for a seven-yard sack. Trey Palmer fair-caught the resulting punt at the Bucs' 16.
Mayfield faked a handoff on first down, drifted right and made a precision pass to Evans on the sideline for a gain of 13. Irving got four on a quick dash over left tackle but his swing pass on the next play failed to gain a yard. A deep out to Evans was on target again but S Tyler Nubin got there to break it up. Trenton Gill's first punt flipped the field back to the Giants' 28.
DeVito's attempted screen to TE Theo Johnson was sniffed out immediately by David, who hit Johnson in the backfield to break it up. Two plays later on third-and-six, CB Zyon McCollum flipped WR Wan'Dale Robinson upside down on a short catch and he landed a yard shy of the sticks. The Giants elected to go for it and handed off to Robinson on an end-around and OLB Yaya Diaby stopped him short of the line to gain.
The Buccaneers thus took over at the Giants' 37 and Irving ended the first quarter with a two-yard run. After the teams switched sides, Mayfield scrambled right and fired a laser to Evans for a gain of 26 to the Giants' nine. A screen out to the right to Irving got the ball down to the one but Tucker's third-down run was stopped for a loss. The Bucs averted disaster when Mayfield was the first to notice that Tucker had lost the ball, and he raced from the backfield to dive on it at the five. K Chase McLaughlin came on to give the Bucs a 10-point lead with a 23-yard field goal.
After another touchback, Nelson started the next drive with a six-yard sack of DeVito. Two plays later, on third-and-13, Vea chased the quarterback out of the pocket and his scramble came up 11 yards short, leading to another punt. This one bounced out of bounds at the Bucs' 18.
TE Payne Durham got the next drive started with an impressive leaping catch of a lob thrown by Mayfield on the run for a gain of 26. Irving got a total of 11 yards on his next two runs but they were sandwiched around a false start so the Bucs faced a third-and-four on the midfield stripe. Mayfield kept the drive alive by breaking out to the left and dashing for a gain of nine. Mayfield then dropped back and looked deep down the left numbers, where he found Otton for a gain of 30 to the Giants' 11. A quick-hitter to Evans got five and Irving zipped up the middle on the next play for a six-yard touchdown run.
The Giants had 6:23 left in the half when they got the ball at their 30 again, and two Tracy runs got a combined 10 yards. Busted coverage got Johnson wide open crossing right to left and DeVito found him for a gain of 23 to the Bucs' 37. Bowles dialed up a blitz two plays later and Vea lead the charge to DeVito for an eight-yard sack. On third-and-16, DeVito had to throw the ball away as the pocket collapsed thanks to good coverage downfield. The Giants punted from the Bucs' 43 and Palmer waved it in at the 14.
Irving got the Bucs drive immediately into gear, catching a pass one yard behind the line of scrimmage and juking out nearly the entire Giants defense to break free around the left side for a gain of 33. The last play before the two-minute warning was a seven-yard Tucker catch that got the ball across midfield. Mayfield was pressured into an incompletion after the break but he found Palmer on a deep out to keep the drive alive with a gain of 18. After a Giants timeout, White was tripped up for a gain of just one. White picked up a blitz on second down to give Mayfield time to hit Shepard for a gain of three. The Giants spent a second timeout with exactly a minute left in the half. Mayfield was chased into an incompletion on third down but an illegal contact call on CB Deonte Banks gifted the Bucs a new set of downs at the 20. White took a short pass and weaved through traffic for 10 more. Mayfield then took care of matters by himself, scrambling up the middle, juking one defender and jumping over another into the end zone for a touchdown.
The Giants kneeled once to bring on halftime.
New York had the ball to start the second half and DeVito immediately turned in his best pass of the game to that point, a 21-yard strike to rookie WR Malik Nabers. DeVito hit Nabers on his next two passes as well, getting gains of eight and 13. On the second one, CB Jamel Dean punched the ball out and it bounced out of bounds. The Bucs challenged the ruling of a catch and fumble but it was upheld and New York had a first down at the Bucs' 28. Two plays later, DeVito zipped a pass out right to Robinson, who was able to get to the Bucs' 16. An incompletion and an eight-yard Tracy run made it third-and-two, and Tracy was able to power his way to the five to make it first-and-goal. A swarm of defenders got to Tracy behind the line of scrimmage on the next play and the ball came out. The fumble was forced by David and recovered by Kancey at the five-yard line.
The Bucs were still backed up on third-and-eight moments later but Mayfield saved them with his legs again, scrambling up and then to the right and beating a defender (thanks in part to a great block from White near the end) to get past the sticks. Tampa Bay faced another third down from the 21 and an illegal motion penalty on Shepard erased a 17-yard catch-and-run by TE Cade Otton. This time Mayfield solved the matter with his arm, firing a 14-yard strike down the middle to WR Ryan Miller. Mayfield just got his next pass over the outstretched arm of a defender and WR Rakim Jarrett made a leaping catch, falling on his back for a gain of 30. A 15-yard out to Evans got the ball down to the Giants' 23. On third-and-nine, Evans ran a double move into the end zone and Mayfield threw it up for him. The receiver couldn't get to the ball but he drew a pass interference penalty on CB Adoree' Jackson, making it first-and-goal at the one. A pitch to White worked to perfection as he got the right edge for the score and a 30-0 lead with 3:45 left in the second quarter.
The Giants got off to another good drive start, with DeVito and Nabers hooking up two more times for 15 yards to get the ball to the 50. Nelson corralled Devin Singletary on a short pass for a loss of three to make it third-and-nine, and Johnson was able to extend the ball past the sticks on a short pass for a new set of downs. The Giants then backed up 10 yards on an offensive pass interference penalty on the last play of the third quarter. DeVito got it back to third-and-10 and then moved the chains with a 16-yard dart to Robinson. The Giants then faced a third-and-four at the 18 and DeVito saw the middle of the field open up, taking off on a run all the way to the one-yard line. Singletary ran it in on the next play to put the Giants on the board with 11:28 left.
The Bucs had to start their next drive with their backs against the goal line due to a mishap on the kickoff. Tucker tried to field a bouncing kick and he made contact with the ball before it rolled into the end zone. Tucker had to race back to get it and try to get it across the goal line to avoid a safety. He managed to do so, and two plays later Irving took a toss sweep left, got around the corner and then broke into the open field for a 56-yard gain to the Giants' 39. Unfortunately, two plays later a botched exchange between Mayfield and White left the ball on the ground and DT D.J. Davidson recovered it for New York at the 35.
A DeVito scramble and a Johnson catch picked up a combined 13 yards for a first down at the Giants 48. After a one-yard run, DeVito's next three passes were incomplete and the ball was turned over on downs with 7:25 left.
Irving took a toss left and got two yards; he fumbled at the end of the run but it was recovered by Bucs G Ben Bredeson. Two more runs failed to move the chains and the Bucs punted from the Giants' 43.
New York got it back at its own 10 but incurred a false start penalty. DeVito's next two passes were incomplete but the second one was erased by an offsides call on Kancey. Kancey delivered a hit on the quarterback on the play and DeVito briefly left the game. After one three-yard completion by Drew Lock, DeVito came back in and was sacked on third down by Winfield. The Giants elected to punt on fourth-and-nine and the Bucs got it back on the Giants' 39. Content just to run out the clock Tampa Bay ran the ball four times and came up a yard short of the first down. DeVito managed to get the Giants down to the Bucs' 14, helped by a roughing the passer flag on Nelson, but his next two passes were incomplete and the game came to an end.
