HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On how he thought centers Robert Hainsey and Graham Barton performed against Cincinnati)
"I'm still in the process of looking at that, but I saw some good things. There was a snap on the ground – I've got to finish looking at the tape – but from a run-game standpoint, I thought they did a decent job of getting up to the second level."
(On outside linebackers Chris Braswell, Markees Watts, and Jose Ramirez)
"I thought Braswell did fine, physically. He didn't get a chance to rush the passer much with the fronts we had him in. He dropped once or twice. I thought Jose did a good job because he drew a couple holding penalties. He got off the ball well. Watts, he had a few chances. He got pushed by some, trying to move and trying to get up and under and they kind of pushed him down – but, he did better in the run game. All three of them had their positives and have some things to work on."
(On TE Devin Culp leaving to be evaluated for a concussion)
"He's fine. He came back in the game."
(On the competition at the wide receiver position)
"Yeah, there's a lot of competition. Three, four, five, and six are going to really be tough. We've got some guys that can play, some guys that can do different things, and some guys that can play special teams. These next two games will be important. Those guys did a good job."
(On which of the final two remaining preseason games will see more starters)
"Depending on how much work we get in Jacksonville during the practice week, I'm leaning towards the third game because we'll have two weeks to get ready for the game. We'll see how much practice the 'ones' get. They'll have the day off, so they'll get a lot of work that week. Depending on how much work they get, they'll probably sit this one. If they don't, then some of them will play a little more. I'm leaning towards the third game where everybody plays."
(On how he thought the team performed in the new kickoff format)
"I know the last coverage got out – the last return got out, for them, over the 30[-yard line] at the end of the ballgame. For the most part, I thought they did okay. I'm still evaluating the film on that aspect. We want to try some different things and we're still in the process of that. They didn't do a bad job."
(On running backs Sean Tucker and Bucky Irving's performance against Cincinnati on Saturday)
"I think the biggest thing is they're getting downhill. Nobody is dancing back there like they were in the past. They understand where the holes are a little better and they've gotten a year to mature – at least Sean does, Bucky is a natural runner like that. They're recognizing the holes and they're doing a good job in practice of seeing where it has to be and they're exploding through it."
(On the lack of pressures on the quarterback last night)
"I saw it from Jose [Ramirez] – I think the other guys can get better at it. I saw some interior pass rush that I liked, but we'll get better at that from the outside. They were doing some covering, as well, so we're working on different things with them. There were things they needed to work on."
(On how he thought S Kaevon Merriweather and LB J.J. Russell played last night)
"I thought they both did a good job. Merriweather flew around. He kind of fit in the run game where needed. He was active. J.J. was exactly the same – he tackled well in space, he took his drops, and he commanded the unit, which is what I wanted to see."
(On if there's a legitimate competition for the backup quarterback spot)
"It's only one game. They've got two more games to see how this plays out. They both made some good plays, they'd both like to have some plays back, obviously. Kyle [Trask] threw it soft a couple of times and he's got to let it go. John [Wolford] made some good throws underneath when he was under pressure, but it's still a competition. There's still two games to go. It's still close."
(On if he knows whether he will carry two or three quarterbacks on the roster)
"It's too early to tell. Depending on the numbers we have and who we need to keep in the extra guys…We'll evaluate that in a couple of weeks, but right now, I'm not sure."
(On if defensive coordinators Larry Foote and Kacy Rodgers called the defense on Saturday, and if there's a reason for that)
"I needed the practice. They called it in practice. I kind of scripted it some…I needed the work, and I needed the practice. They'll probably call the next two. I needed the practice right there. I needed the work."
(On how he'd evaluate his performance)
"Average."
(On the team's run defense on Saturday, and the performance of defensive backs Keenan Isaac and Tykee Smith)
"Run game-wise, I thought they did a good job – especially the d-line. The [linebackers] shot they gap pretty [well], and the outside [linebackers] held the edge, the safeties really did a good job of forcing everything back. I thought Isaac made a heck of a play on the interception right there. He finds the ball. Tykee was sound – he played like he practiced. He was in position and everywhere he needed to be. They were very sound."
