HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On what the Buccaneers are doing to educate players on league gambling policies)
"We have gambling policy rules that we go over every year – probably once in the [summer] once everybody gets here. You don't really do it in the spring because [player attendance] isn't mandatory, so you don't reach everybody. Next week in mandatory mini-camp, we'll sit down and have that meeting and we'll discuss it. They'll know exactly what they can and can't do."
(On T Tristan Wirfs and how he's adjusting to a position change)
"He's adjusting, so far, pretty [well]. We're out of pads – you've got to get in pads so he can get the feel for it. His footwork is good. We like what we see over there thus far."
(On having more veteran players participating in OTAs)
"Yeah, most of them have been here the whole time. Some of them have been in and out, but we've had a good turnout so far so it's been pretty good."
(On what OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka has to do to break out)
"We like what he was doing last year. He was kind of missing at the top of the pass rush – he probably missed more [sacks] than he made. If he can wrap up and tackle those, he'll be right where we want him to be."
(On how Tryon-Shoyinka can avoid missing sacks)
"It's not leaving your feet so early and it's going through – pushing through – with your shoulder and understanding when you can go for the ball and when you can't go for the ball."
(On what kind of attendance he expects for mini-camp next week)
"It's mandatory – I expect everybody to be here."
(On if there are any players who won't be able to participate in mini-camp)
"They should still be here."
(On if anybody stood out today)
"We got some good things done. Obviously, trying to get Mike [Evans] and Chris [Godwin] involved is very important… Both sides of the ball, I thought we made some good plays. There are some things we've got to correct and we'll get to the film and do that."
(On if he expects LB Devin White to be present for mini-camp)
"It's mandatory – I expect everybody to be here."
(On if he expects any players to be sidelined for mini-camp)
"Not at this time, no."
(On what kind of progress he's seen with players learning a new offense)
"They're adding something every day. It's all 11, plus new coaches. You've got to add something every day – it's a progression. Everybody is starting to understand what to do and how to do it. We're piecing it together. They're adding nuances daily and it's a good practice and I think the guys are on the same page."
(On if he's seeing the vision for Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales' offense)
"I had seen the vision when I talked to him during the interview. I know we're not at the end result and we have plenty of time for that, but I see it coming to fruition."
(On how OL Luke Goedeke is doing on the right side)
"He played it in college – he was a right tackle. It's not uncomfortable for him. He's energized, he's ready to go. It's hard to tell the progress when you're in shorts and a t-shirt and you really can't put hands on anybody to the point where you're bringing them to the ground. But the progress and the intelligence has been great."
(On if C Ryan Jensen will be able to participate in mini-camp)
"We'll see how he's feeling. It's off and on with that. We'll see how he feels in camp."
(On if RB Sean Tucker will be able to participate in mini-camp)
"I haven't been told anything thus far. I'd expect him some time around training camp – I'm not sure about next week."
(On the biggest difference he's looking for during mini-camp compared to OTAs)
"Just guys [being] in shape and communication is a big part of it – communication and chemistry on the field is everything. [I'm looking] for the guys to communicate and get to trust the guys next to them."
TACKLE TRISTAN WIRFS
(On how the transition to left tackle is going)
"Good – as good as [it] can. I'm just taking every day as an opportunity to keep getting better and to keep building that muscle memory over there."
(On if he needed to be convinced to change positions)
"Not really. I told them, 'I'd do whatever you guys need me to do – if this is what you guys think is best, then that's what I'll do.'"
(On when he started preparing himself for the position change)
"The day after the season ended, when I had my meeting with Coach [Todd] Bowles. He said this is probably what we're going to do, so that's kind of when I started thinking about it."
(On the biggest difference between right tackle and left tackle)
"Everything. It's just that everything is backwards – getting used to throwing my left hand instead of my right and not throwing with my right and opening up. Or my weight distribution – I always used to keep my weight in my left leg, now I want to keep it in my right. It's so similar – you're doing the same stuff – but it's all just flipped."
(On if the position change can be equated to riding a bicycle as he played left tackle briefly at Iowa)
"Yeah, it's slowly coming back. At first, it felt so weird, but then I'm like okay it's starting to get better. It's like one thing at a time is getting more comfortable. My set was good, now I've got to work on my vertical set and getting that back. I think the biggest thing is going to be my hands because my right hand was my bread and butter and [my left hand] just kind of sat here. Now, I've got to wake it up and get it to do something."
OUTSIDE LINEBACKER JOE TRYON-SHOYINKA
(On his thoughts on the front-seven players that were drafted by the Buccaneers this year)
"We got a lot of good, young dudes in this draft. They're going to be able to do a lot of multiple things. The defense has a lot of moving pieces, so I think they're going to be a really good addition to the defense. The past couple practices, they've been catching on pretty well."
(On working with Outside Linebackers Coach George Edwards)
"He loves the game. He eats, sleeps, breathes football. Being able to pick his brain in meetings and on the field has been really good to accelerate my learning process of the game… He's a really knowledgeable person – he's been in a lot of schemes. He's been around the game a long time, so it's been a pretty good process."
(On how T Tristan Wirfs looks on the opposite side)
"He's still big as hell, still 350 pounds [laughs]. He's going to be alright, he's going to be straight. For him, it's definitely a mental thing. He'll be straight… No drop off."
(On how he can finish his pass rush and get the quarterback on the ground)
"It's just mental at that point. You've got to have that willpower to finish, and being in position isn't enough. You want to make those plays – you're going to rewind those plays that you missed every time and be sick, thinking about what could have been. At the end of the day, you've got to move on and try to improve and that's all I'm going to do."
(On if there's anything specific that he's working on right now)
"Understanding the defense – when you do that, you play faster, you know what your teammate is doing on the other side of the ball. Me and [Anthony] Nelson have been doing a really good job this offseason, just talking and picking each other's brain. Different players have different perspectives and you can learn from a lot of different people. It's been a good mental [exercise] for me this year."
CORNERBACK CARLTON DAVIS III
(On if he feels like he's an 'old guy' on the team)
"Yes, I do. I felt that way for a couple years, especially in my room. It's a blessing to be able to be an old guy in this league. I just want to do my part in teaching the young guys and catching them up to speed."
(On CB Jamel Dean signing a contract extension this offseason)
"It's so special, man, I'm so happy for him. That's my guy. Everybody knows the history between me and him. It's just crazy because when I first met him – who would have thought? Right? Who would have thought? It's hard to put it into words, but I'm happy that he's back with me and that we can continue to bounce off each other and continue to make each other better. I think we've always been a great tandem – even back in college. I think the front office sees that, the coaches see that and anybody who knows football can see that. Whenever me and him are side-by-side, kicking butt, we do a good job. We've got a chance to be a really good team."
(On people overlooking the Buccaneers)
"I never really paid attention to any of that stuff. I'm oblivious to it. Even when Tom [Brady] was here – of course we got a lot of attention – but that was never my focus. I was never feeding off of it or motivated by it or anything like that. For me, it's just another season to prove ourselves again. Obviously, people are underrating us, but I think that's a good thing because when we punch you in the mouth, it'll be, 'Oh man, okay, this is the same team, the same culture.' I think it's a great opportunity for everybody – not even just myself – to prove ourselves and show how great of players, individually, we are and how we can come together as a team and have that same culture and that winning mentality."
(On what he tries to get out of OTAs and the offseason)
"Building culture within our team, especially with us being a young group. Raising the competition level – raising everybody's play – just by competing at a high level and making it contagious to everybody. Letting them know that there's a standard and this is how we're going to practice and that eventually translates to game days."
