Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Bucs' First Defensive Depth Chart Includes Changes in the Secondary

Third-year man Zyon McCollum appears ready to step into an expanded role and the return of Jordan Whitehead gives the Bucs hope of fielding one of the NFL's best secondaries

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are entering the 2024 season with a starting secondary at least 50% different from a year ago, though the new contributors aren't exactly unfamiliar assets.

The Buccaneers rewound the clock by bringing back safety Jordan Whitehead after he spent two very valuable formative years with the New York Jets, and he is slated to start next to All-Pro Antoine Winfield Jr. Meanwhile, third-year cornerback Zyon McCollum is expected to be a Day One starter for the first time after proving himself with a series of starts in 2023. There is also some intrigue at the slot corner job, which is essentially a starting position.

Still a month away from playing the regular-season opener, the Buccaneers are now operating with an "official" depth chart, as they were required to put one together for the first preseason game. Tampa Bay opens its 2024 preseason on Saturday with a visit to Cincinnati to play the Bengals. There will be at least three new starters on defense from a year ago.

Defensive Line – The three listed starters in the base 3-4 formation are the same as last year, with nose tackle Vita Vea flanked by Calijah Kancey and Logan Hall. All three are high draft picks – Vea went 12th overall in 2018, Hall 33rd overall in 2022 and Kancey 19th overall in 2023. Vea used the offseason to reshape his physique in order to rebuild stamina and Kancey could be in for a second-season breakout after showing flashes of dominance in his rookie campaign. Veterans Will Gholston and Greg Gaines, both of whom re-signed with the team this offseason are listed in the second column, as is 2022 undrafted free agent Mike Greene, who made the roster in his second season. There is a lot of depth to sort through beyond that, including undrafted free agent Judge Culpepper, who is the son of former Buccaneer standout Brad Culpepper.

Outside Linebacker – The Bucs had a scare at this position when 2023 rookie breakout player Yaya Diaby was carted off the practice field with an ankle injury on Thursday, but the eventual diagnosis was a sprain that shouldn't keep him out of the regular season opener. Diaby is now the Bucs' top OLB after the release (and eventual retirement) of Shaquil Barrett, and there is competition to start on the other end of the line. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, a 2021 first-round pick, is the leader in that competition, but the Bucs also want to round out an edge-rush rotation for the regular season. Anthony Nelson and rookie second-rounder Chris Braswell are listed in the second column. The Bucs went deep at that position last year and could keep six on the active roster again, with Markees Watts and Jose Ramirez as prime candidates.

Inside Linebacker – K.J. Britt appears to have seized the second starting spot next to the ageless Lavonte David with a strong training camp, and he is indeed listed in the first column of the depth chart. Second-year man SirVocea Dennis, a fifth-round draft pick, and undrafted rookie Kalen DeLoach are next in line on the printed chart. J.J. Russell, in his third year with the team, is listed in the third column after getting some starting experience last year. Special teams contributions could be key for this group, which also includes Vi Jones and undrafted rookie Antonio Grier.

Cornerback – As noted above, Zyon McCollum is slated to be a Week One starter for the first time as he enters his third season. The Buccaneers are confident in him stepping into that role after they traded Carlton Davis to the Detroit Lions, especially because McCollum played the most defensive snaps of any Bucs cornerback last year. There is a heated battle for the slot cornerback snaps, as second-year man Christian Izien enters as the incumbent but is getting heat from third-round rookie Tykee Smith and veteran acquisition Tavierre Thomas. All three are cross-training at that spot and both safety positions. Another veteran pickup, former Jet Bryce Hall, joins 2023 draft pick Josh Hayes as the players listed second on the cornerback depth chart. They are followed by 2023 undrafted free agent Keenan Isaac and one of camp's early standouts, undrafted rookie Tyrek Funderburk.

Safety – Antoine Winfield Jr. is a reigning first-team Associated Press All-Pro and Jordan Whitehead is the accomplished vet the Bucs regret letting get away in 2022, so the starting lineup at this spot is very much set. Whitehead is currently dealing with a minor injury but is expected back soon. Izien shares the second column on the depth chart with Kaevon Merriweather, who made the team as an undrafted rookie last year and is known as a hard-hitter. Smith and Thomas occupy the third column on the safety depth chart but could both be in line for major roles.

Specialists – There is no competition for the two kicking jobs this year, as both punter Jake Camarda and placekicker Chase McLaughlin are coming off very strong 2023 seasons. McLaughlin, in fact, produced the most impressive campaign ever for a Buccaneers kicker and is both deadly accurate and good from long range. There is a battle at long-snapper, with incumbent Zach Triner facing off against 2023 undrafted rookie Evan Deckers.
