The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' bid to deal the defending NFL champions their first loss of 2024 went to overtime on Monday night in Kansas City, but Patrick Mahomes directed a 70-yard touchdown drive to start the extra period in a 30-24 victory for the home team. It was the Buccaneers' second overtime loss of the season, following a 36-30 decision in Atlanta in Week Five.

The Buccaneers had tied the game on a clutch 71-yard touchdown drive in the final two minutes of regulation, with QB Baker Mayfield hitting WR Ryan Miller on a one-yard scoring pass with 27 seconds remaining. But Kansas City won the coin toss to start overtime and Mayfield never touched the ball gain.

Head Coach Todd Bowles said the Buccaneers didn't think long about trying a two-point attempt after Miller's touchdown.

"Very minor," said Bowles. "We wanted to get it to overtime with the wet conditions on the field. We felt like we had to go to overtime instead of going for two. We had our shots and we lost the game. We went for one. We had our shots. We had our chances the whole game. It didn't come down to that."

On a rain-soaked night, Mayfield completed 23 of 31 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and a 112.3 passer rating. He gave the Buccaneers a 14-10 lead in the third quarter with an 11-yard scoring toss to TE Cade Otton, who caught eight passes for 77 yards and that score. The Buccaneers also ran for 95 yards against the NFL's second-ranked rush defense. The game featured four different lead changes.

"Against a team like that, it comes down to little things," said Mayfield. "Everybody has a hand in this one. … We've got a home game next week against an NFC opponent and we've got to find a way to win."

Tampa Bay's defense sacked Mahomes four times but he still threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns on 34 of 44 passing. He targeted veteran tight end Travis Kelce all night long, and Kelce finished with 14 receptions for exactly 100 yards. RB Kareem Hunt ran 27 times for 16 yards and one touchdown.

The loss, Tampa Bay's third in a row, dropped the Buccaneers to 4-5 after a 3-1 start to the season. With the Atlanta Falcons' win over Dallas on Sunday, the Bucs dropped to two games out in the NFC South Division race, and Atlanta also holds a strong tiebreaker thanks to a two-game sweep in the head-to-head battle. It was also Tampa Bay's first loss in Kansas City since 1986.

"It's tough," said Bowles. "We don't take anything from it but a loss, and we can't get used to losing. That's the biggest thing – we're not going to get used to losing. We had some big plays, we took our swings, but they connected more than we did. We fought but it wasn't good enough, so we've got to get ready next week for another one."

Despite a steady rain that began hours before kickoff, the game was relatively clean on both sides. The two teams combined for nine penalties and CB Josh Hayes' fumble recovery in the second quarter, after S Tykee Smith had punched the ball out of Kelce's hands. Tampa Bay's defense allowed 314 yards in regulation, and defensive linemen Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea recorded two sacks apiece. S Antoine Winfield Jr. led the defense with 12 tackles and OLB Yaya Diaby added two tackles for loss.

RB Rachaad White gave the Buccaneers their first lead early in the second quarter when he ran seven yards for a touchdown, and K Chase McLaughlin hit a 47-yard field goal in the third period to put the Bucs up 17-10. But Mahomes responded with a 78-yard touchdown drive that drained eight-and-a-half minutes off the clock and ended in a five-yard touchdown pass to WR DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins, just acquired in a trade with Tennessee last week, caught eight passes for 86 yards and two scores.

The Bucs won the toss and deferred (a departure from their usual strategy this season), and thus Kansas City started the game at its own 30 after a touchback. A five-yard run by Kareem Hunt and a short pass to Kelce made it third-and-one and a second-effort by Hunt got the ball just over the line to gain. A quick pass over the middle got 11 more to Kelce to get the ball just across midfield. Three plays later, on third-and-three, Kelce ran an in-and-out route and Mahomes found him for a gain of nine and a new set of downs. Replay assistance helped overrule what was originally called a catch by WR Xavier Worthy at the Bucs' two-yard line, and two plays later Vea broke through for a coverage sack to force a punt from the Bucs' 41.

After a punt that was fair caught at the Bucs' 6, Otton went in motion and then caught a quick pass out right for a gain of nine. White made a nice cutback on a second-down throw to add 11 more to the Chiefs' 26. Irving's first run gained three yards but Mayfield's next pass was nearly intercepted. On third-and-seven, Mayfield's pass was tipped at the line and the Bucs had to punt. Return man Mecole Hardman broke containment on is runback but LB J.J. Russell was able to prevent a touchdown with a tackle at the Chiefs' 48.

A play-action rollout pass to WR DeAndre Hopkins started the Cheifs' second drive with a quick eight yards, and Mahomes followed with a quick slant to the same target for 17 more to the Bucs' 30. Two plays later, a patented Mahomes scramble got the ball down to the Bucs' 20, but OLB Yaya Diaby sniffed out an end-around to Worthy and dropped him for a loss of 10. On the next two plays, David reacted quickly to short passes and stopped each for gains of four, leading to Harrison Butker's 40-yard field goal to open the scoring.

After a touchback, Irving ran into a wall on first down for no gain, then gained four on a second-down counter. A defensive holding call gave the Bucs a first down at their own 39, and a three-yard run by White brought the first quarter to an end. The Bucs started the second quarter with a delay of game but Otton turned a short pass into an 11-yard gain and, on third-and-one, Shepard found a seam on an end-around to dahs all the way to the KC 33. Irving made the most of screen in a crowd to get four, then cut back up the middle on an extended handoff for a first down at the Chiefs' 21. Two short passes left the Bucs in a third-and-nine but Shepard got wide open near the right sideline for a gain of 13 to the seven. A pitch to White on first down was perfectly blocked and he glided into the end zone for the go-ahead score.

After a touchback, CB Zyon McCollum ropped Kelce for a loss of one on a tight end screen, but Mahomes came back with a 12-yard completion to WR Justin Watson. A three-yard run by Hunt and a three-yard sack by Vea canceled each other out but Watson got wide open down the right hashmarks for a 19-yard gain into Bucs' territory. A great open-field tackle by David on a swing pass to Worthy put Kansas City into another third down at the 38, and Vea hit Mahomes as he threw but the resulting lob was somehow hauled in by Hopkins at the three between three Bucs defenders. Two runs by Hunt got two yards, and Mahomes went back to Hopkins in the back of the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown on third down.

A kickoff that bounced to Irving and was downed in the end zone resulted in a touchback to the 20, and a sack of Mayfield by George Karlaftis two plays later made it third-and-10. White fought through defenders on a third-down screen but couldn't get to the line of gain resulting in a punt as the two-minute warning arrived. Under pressure, Trenton Gill got off a punt that took a favorable bounce to the Chiefs' 17.

A little flip over the middle to RB Samaje Perine started the Chiefs' next drive with an 11-yard gain. Mahomes' next two passes were incomplete, the second pressured by Vea but the Chiefs' star passer moved the sticks again with a 21-yard strike to Kelce to the Chiefs' 49. After a KC timeout, Mahomes threw to the end zone for Watson but it was out of his reach. On the next play, Kelce caught a short pass but Smith knocked the ball out of his hands and Hayes fell on it to give the Bucs possession at their own 45.

It was quickly third-and-six and the Bucs called a designed drop-back run for Mayfield, which worked until a holding call on Cody Mauch called it back. Another run by Mayfield got 10 yards back but he was knocked out of bounds at the 32-second mark. Gill's punt was fair caught at the Chiefs' 17 with 25 seconds on the clock.

The Chiefs got a first down on their first two plays and called a timeout with 10 seconds to go in the half. Two plays later, however, Kancey dropped Mahomes for a loss of seven and both teams trotted into the tunnel for halftime.

The Bucs got the ball first in the second half and got off to a good start when Irving sliced through traffic on his kickoff return to get 46 yards to the 49. After a three-yard run, RB Sean Tucker got a swing pass left and got it to the KC 48 to make it third-and-one. Tucker then bounced another handoff out to the left and not only got over the line to gain but drew a horse-caller penalty that took the ball down to the Chiefs' 22. WR Rakim Jarrett bounced off a tackler on a quick slant and reversed field to get nine yards, and another Shepard end-around made it first down at the 11. On the next play, Otton snuck out to the left and got behind the defense for an 11-yard touchdown on a perfect touch pass from Mayfield.

The Chiefs' first drive of the second half came after a touchback and started with an incompletion pressured by OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. Smith then knocked the ball away from Kelce on second down and Kancey rushed in to drop a scrambling Mahomes for a 12-yard sack on third down. Trey Palmer got the ball back to the Bucs' 41 on the ensuing punt.

Mayfield looked to WR Marquez Callaway on a deep route then came back to Otton down the left seam for a gain of 18. Otton held on despite taking a huge hit to his back from Jaden Hicks. That got the ball down to the Chiefs' 41, but it was third-and-seven moments later, then third-and-12 after a false start. Mayfield kept the drive alive with a hard pass out to Otton on the left sideline, with the tight end turning it upfield for a gain of 15. Unfortunately, a facemask penalty on Tristan Wirfs backed the offense up 15 yards. The Bucs couldn't recover from that but did get the ball back to the Chiefs' 29 to set up an 47-yard field goal attempt, which Chase McLaughlin nailed to give the Bucs a seven-point lead with 5:50 left in the third quarter.

Hunt went straight up the middle for seven to start the Chiefs' ensuing drive, then powered for nine more over left tackle. Two more Hunt runs put Kansas City into a third-and-six at the midfield stripe, and Hardman was able to spin out of a tackle on a short pass to get just enough for a first down. A quick out to Kelce picked up eight, and offsetting penalties erased the next play but Hunt then broke free for a gain of 15 to the Bucs' 20-yard line. Hunt wnt up the middle for seven, and got four more for a first down at the nine on the next snap. An end-around to Hardman didn't work, as Diaby got there to drop him at the 11 on a play that ended the third quarter. Mahomes underhand flip to Kelce up the middle got the ball to the seven and made it third-and-goal. Mahomes completed the drive with one of his patented improvisations, scrambling right then releasing a flip into the end zone for a game-tying touchdown pass to RB Samaje Perine.

The Bucs followed with an ill-timed three-and-out. Mayfield tried to scramble for the first down on third-and-seven but was stopped two yards short and the Bucs punted. The ball was fair caught at Kansas City's 22 with 12:43 left in regulation.

Two short passes to Kelce produced an initial first down and Hunt went over right guard for six. The Bucs stopped two more runs to make it fourth-and-one at the Chiefs' 46, but the home team went for it and Hunt was able to move the chains with a three-yard run. A tunnel screen to Hardman led to another first down at the Tampa Bay 39 and the Bucs gave up five more yards on an offsides penalty. The Bucs still managed to make it third-and-five, but Mahomes moved the chains again with a 12-yard strike to Watson over the middle. Hunt then bashed it down to the nine, and three plays later Mahomes zipped a five-yard touchdown pass to Hawkins to give the Chiefs the lead with just over four minutes to play.

That drive ate up more than eight minutes, and the Bucs unfortunately followed with a three-and-out that included a sack of Mayfield. The visitors were forced to punt on fourth-and-16, but the defense did what it needed to do with its own three-and-out, and the Bucs got the ball back at their 29 with a little over two minutes to play. A holding call backed them up 10 yards but Mayfield hit Palmer for 14 as the two-minute warning arrived. Mayfield got the ball across midfield with an 18-yard strike to Shepard, then made it third-and-one at the KC 40 with a sideline pass to Shepard. Three plays later, White ran for nine yards on third-and-one down to the 31, and Mayfield's hook-up with Shepard three snaps after that gained 19 yards to the one. After an incomplete attempt to Otton, Mayfield found a wide-open Miller on second down for the game-tying score with 27 seconds left in regulation.

The Chiefs got nowhere in those last few seconds and the game went into overtime. The Chiefs won the toss and the Bucs never had the chance to respond.
