The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today elevated punter Trenton Gill and wide receiver Cody Thompson from the practice squad to the active roster for Tampa Bay's Week 5 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. It marks the second elevation of the season for Gill and the first of the season for Thompson.
Gill (6-4, 219) was signed to the Buccaneers practice squad on Sept. 24. He played in Tampa Bay's Week 4 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, punting four times and recording a net average of 37.5 yards per punt. Gill originally entered the league as a seventh-round selection (No. 255 overall) by the Chicago Bears in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 35 career games between the Bears and Buccaneers, punting 137 times for a gross punting average of 45.8 and a net punting average of 39.1. The Hillsborough, North Carolina, native played collegiately at North Carolina State (2017-21), appearing in 36 career games and punting 173 times for a 45.8 gross average – the highest mark in program history. He wears No. 16 for Tampa Bay.
Thompson (6-2, 205) was signed by the Buccaneers on June 6, 2024, and spent all of training camp with the team before being waived on Aug. 27 and re-signing to the team's practice squad on Aug. 29. He originally entered the league as a college free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 and has since spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals. He has appeared in 12 career games – all for the Seahawks – between the 2021 and 2023 seasons, bringing in one career reception for 10 yards. During the 2024 preseason, Thompson led the league with 15 receptions and ranked eighth among all players in receiving yards (137). The Huron, Ohio, native played collegiately at the University of Toledo (2014-18), appearing in 56 career games and bringing in 181 receptions for 3,312 yards and a program-record 30 receiving touchdowns. He received first-team All-MAC honors in 2016 and 2018, the two seasons in which he recorded double-digit touchdown receptions. He wears No. 83 for Tampa Bay.
