Coen begins his first season as offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2024.
Coen brings 14 years of coaching experience to Tampa Bay, including four years at the NFL level – all with the Los Angeles Rams. He joins the Buccaneers from the University of Kentucky, where he served as the program's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2023 and 2021 seasons. Prior to his most recent stint with the Wildcats, Coen was the Rams' offensive coordinator in 2022 after spending time as the club's assistant quarterbacks coach (2020) and assistant wide receivers coach (2018-19).
During his time at the University of Kentucky, Coen put forth two of the highest-scoring single seasons in school history. The 2021 Wildcats team amassed 56 total touchdowns while the 2023 Wildcats team scored 50 total touchdowns – two of the six instances in the 108-year program history in which they have scored 50-or-more touchdowns in a single season. On top of the scoring production, Coen's teams were one of the most efficient in the SEC, amassing over 425 net yards of offense per game in 2021 and recording a school- record 8.0 yards per touch during the 2023 campaign. Coen helped bring the Wildcats to new heights, leading them to a combined 17 wins across his two seasons there, and contributing to the fourth 10-win season in school history.
In his two seasons at Kentucky, Coen coached a pair of quarterbacks who were drafted into the NFL in Will Levis (Tennessee Titans, 2023) and Devin Leary (Baltimore Ravens, 2024). The last Kentucky quarterback to be drafted and appear in an NFL game prior to Levis was Tim Couch (1999). Overall, as a collegiate coach, Coen has coached five different quarterbacks who earned at least a chance to compete for an NFL roster spot including: Dan Collins (Maine), Blake Frohnapfel (Massachusetts), Leary (Kentucky), Levis (Kentucky) and Kyle Newhall-Caballero (Brown). Additionally, under Coen's mentorship, wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson set school records in his final season with 104 receptions and 1,334 receiving yards in his final season in 2021 to earn All-SEC and All-America recognition from various outlets.
Holding multiple positions with the Rams from 2018-20 and 2022, Coen contributed to an offense that ranked among league leaders across those seasons in passing yards per game (248.1; sixth), completions (1,504; 10th), first downs per game (21.4; 10th), third-down conversion rate (41.9%; eighth), goal-to-go efficiency (75.2%; ninth), rushing touchdowns (77; fourth), and fewest sacks allowed (139; eighth).
As assistant wide receivers coach in 2018, Coen helped guide Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks, who each topped 1,200 yards that season on the way to a Super Bowl appearance. The following year, Woods and Cooper Kupp each surpassed 1,100 receiving yards, marking the latter's first 1,000-yard campaign. In 2022, Coen worked with quarterback Baker Mayfield for five games, including a Week 14 Thursday night victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, for which Mayfield earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week Honors after orchestrating a game-winning drive with less than a minute remaining, just two days after joining the organization.
Prior to his time with the Rams, Coen spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the University of Maine (2016-17). He came to the University of Maine from the University of Massachusetts (2014-15), where he had served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Coen also spent three years as the quarterbacks coach at Brown University (2010, 2012-13) and one year as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at the University of Rhode Island (2011).
Before getting into coaching, Coen played quarterback at the University of Massachusetts. He was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2022 and holds the program records for completions (830), attempts (1,302), completion percentage (63.7), passing yards (11,031), yards per attempt (8.5), passing touchdowns (90), and passer rating (150.7). He graduated in 2008 with a degree in communications. A native of Wakefield, Rhode Island, Coen and his wife, Ashley, have two sons, Jackson and Callahan.
