13 Good (and Bad) Luck Buc Bits
In light of Friday the 13th, Buccaneers.com takes a look back at 13 good and bad luck moments in team history.

Lavonte David barely got his angle wrong on the final tackle against the Jets in the 2013 season opener. The hit drew a late hit flag that got New York just close enough for a game-winning field goal rather than what would have surely been a last-ditch Hail Mary attempt.

White blocked a chip shot field goal in overtime against Atlanta in Week 16 of 2005. Losing that game could have killed the Bucs' division title hopes and even put them in a precarious spot for the playoffs. After he blocked it, the Bucs won the game.

GOOD BREAK: Indianapolis recovered a fumble near midfield but the defender was stripped. The ball bounced perfectly to Keenan McCardell on one hop, who fielded it without breaking stride and ran it all the way for a touchdown.

BAD BREAK: Mike Vanderjagt, who technically would not miss a field goal all season in 2003, missed his first try at the overtime game-winner but the play was called back on a "leaping penalty" on Simeon Rice. Here's the really bad break: The Bucs got a hand on his second kick that probably would have missed otherwise, but instead, it was deflected back in the right direction and just barely made it inside the post.

The pass was thrown a little behind Jurevicius but he reached back and tipped it up, then spun around and made a diving catch off of the deflection in the end zone. He claimed to have done the whole thing on purpose, but it was definitely a fortunate outcome.

The Jaguars had cap problems in 2002 which led to the release of WR Keenan McCardell post-June 1. The Buccaneers were waiting and swooped in to sign him. McCardell played a huge part in the Super Bowl run and also made the Pro Bowl for Tampa Bay in 2003.

The Bucs had already clinched a playoff spot, and there's a chance the Sunday night game would be meaningless. If the Packers beat the Jets, they would get a first-round bye and the Bucs would be the #3 or #4 seed. Even that was out of the Bucs' hands; if San Francisco won at St. Louis on Monday night, the Bucs would be the #4 seed no matter what they did on Sunday. As the Bucs prepared for their game, they watched the Jets dismantle the Packers, 42-17. That bit of luck meant they were playing for a first-week bye in Champaign, and they proceeded to throttle the Bears, 15-0. Not that it mattered to Tampa Bay after that, but the 49ers also lost the next night to the Rams.

DE Mike Mamula had a ridiculous showing at the 1995 Combine, essentially leading to the coining of the phrase "Workout Warrior." Considered a possible landing spot for Warren Sapp, Philly took Mamula instead and Sapp stayed on the board until #12, where the Bucs nabbed him.

The Bucs had the ball in OT first but were forced to punt. The Vikings' Eric Guliford not only decided to try to catch it at his own four-yard line but also muffed it, with long-snapper Ed Brady recovering. The Bucs won on the next play on a Michael Husted 22-yard field goal.

The Bucs visited Seattle and appeared to have a 21-15 victory in the bag when Bucs S Marty Carter forced and recovered a fumble by Brian Blades on fourth-and-12 with 1:17 left to play. However, a questionable illegal contact penalty was thrown on CB Mike McGruder away from the play, and that preserved the drive. The Seahawks finished it with the game-winning touchdown.

Bucs RB Lars Tate dove over a huge pile near midfield trying to convert a third-and-one. After flipping over and sliding down the back side of the pile, he amazingly he landed on his feet. As the defense stood around, he ran for a 47-yard touchdown.

The phone connection from the Bucs' draft room in Tampa to their rep in NY allegedly went bad at the worst time during the 1982 draft, leading the rep to turn in the wrong card (Sean Farrell) instead of their supposed intended target Booker Reese (The Bucs traded up to pick Reese at 32 overall).

The Buccaneers won the coin toss in 1976 that gave them the first pick in the college draft instead of Seattle. The Bucs took eventual Hall-of-Famer Lee Roy Selmon. Seattle took DL Steve Niehaus, who played only four seasons in the league due to knee injuries.
