TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS TRAINING CAMP QUOTE SHEET 8-19-21

HEAD COACH BRUCE ARIANS

Opening Statement:

"Really pleased with the work we've gotten the last two days – extremely good competition. Obviously, it always happens when the flyers and the gunners get together, something starts. But it was spirited, it was great practice and I really appreciate the Titans for coming down here and helping us get better, and hopefully we made them better."

(On the offense being sharper on Thursday than it was on Wednesday)

"Yeah, we came back a little bit more and made the plays we're used to seeing every single day. I think yesterday [was] a little bit of the newness and some of that. Coaches got on their ass pretty good, too."

(On the Buccaneers being hungry to compete on Thursday)

"Yeah, better than yesterday. We didn't perform at what we're expected yesterday. I think we did today. I think the tape will kind of prove it to me."

(On if there will be any punishments if the tape shows fighting)

"No."

(on if there will be a lighter load in Saturday's game after all the physical reps in joint practices)

"Oh, definitely. Definitely. Some of those guys that got a lot of reps are going to have to play in this game, but they're fighting for jobs, so they don't mind playing."

(On new players on the offensive line and if he'll be able to rest the starters Saturday)

"Yeah, both the guys we brought in are pretty bright, so they're picking it up. We'll have a very condensed package if they have to play and hopefully we get through the game healthy."

(On RB Giovani Bernard having a 'pretty good' camp)

"I would say more than 'pretty good.' I would say the best thing about him, he's the ultimate pro. He's super-prepared. He came every day in OTAs when he didn't have to. He wanted to be a major part of the offense and he is already. He'll play a little bit Saturday night just to continue to grow in this offense, but not much."

(On who will start at quarterback on Saturday)

"Blaine [Gabbert] will start the game and we'll see how the rest of it goes."

(On what he has seen from T Brad Seaton as Seaton returns from an opt-out season)

"Steady growth. It was really a struggle coming back. He obviously missed a year and the physicality of it and everything, he's picking it back up. This is a big game for him."

(On when rookie OL Robert Hainsey will play in a game)

"I've got my fingers crossed Hainsey will go next week. I'm not going to push it to just find out, I know he can play. So, I just want to make sure he's healthy and hopefully he can go next week."

(On if Nick Leverett would be the second center)

"No, Ali [Marpet] would still be our second center."

(On clarifying that the question was about Leverett being the second center in Saturday's game)

"Oh, in this game? [He's] probably the starting center. We'll wait and see."

(On rookie OLB Joe Tryon showing growth in the last week going against other opponents)

"He's gotten better every single day. That's what he needs to see is guys that play at this level. Play a little bit more under control, you know? The hit he had on the quarterback [against Cincinnati], he did hit him in the head, so whether he was a runner or a quarterback – we've got to lower that target. He's good enough to do that. He's learning on the job."

(On if WR Mike Evans walked off the field gingerly after practice)

"Mike Evans? He was tired."

(On the Bill Walsh Coaching Fellows helping during training camp)

"Oh, it's huge. You're always looking for the next group of guys and girls that can coach at this level. And it gives them a great opportunity, especially here. The college coaches had to leave. The rest of the guys – Louis [Murphy] and Andre King – those guys get to stay the whole camp with Trai [Essex]. That's beneficial to them, then other teams see the fact that, hey, 'I didn't know you were in coaching. Didn't know you wanted to be in coaching.' So they can build a pipeline to hopefully get jobs."

(On the spirited gunner drills)

"It's always that drill."

(On if some guys showed up in that gunner drill)

"Yeah, I'm anxious to go back and watch the tape because I was watching some of the inside guys, some of the outside [guys]. I know Dee Delaney showed up out there. That's the only one I just saw, [whooshing noise], beat the coverage clean."

(On OLB Joe Tryon beating the coverage clean one time, too)

"Yeah, inside that ain't a fair fight. A couple of the young guys inside – Khalil [Davis] showed up. Hopefully he can continue because he's going to have to beat out somebody on that team to make it. He's taking it more serious now."

(on if he felt like he got in the work he wanted in the two joint practices)

"Oh, totally. Totally. Now they were down – we didn't get the other two-minute with our young guys yesterday because they were down linemen. We got one today and then we went to all the short-field stuff. I'd like to have the young guys get more but hopefully they'll get one in the game."

CORNERBACK JAMEL DEAN

(On how he improved his three-step recognition going into this season)

"Really film study and getting reps out of it. After each rep, I like asking him (Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles) what I did wrong and then he explains it to me and then I'll go up to his office to watch the film and see what I'm doing without realizing it. Then, I make it a key focus to work on it during practice."

(On the competition for the cornerback position)

"It's a really intense competition. Throughout the depth chart, everybody is great in their own way. It's going to come down to little things that [are] going to make the coach [think], 'I like this guy.' They all bring something to the table. It's going to be interesting. It's going to be a hard decision for the coaches to make."

(On S Mike Edwards)

"Mike improves every year. He always been a ball hawk since he's been here. He's understanding the game more so now he's just making more of the plays."

(On things he wants to improve on)

"My technique isn't perfect so I try to work every possible technique that I can. Because I don't want anything to fall off when it gets time for the season. I don't need anything new. If I need to change something up during the game, I need to be able to master it."

WIDE RECEIVER CHRIS GODWIN

(On how valuable joint practices with Tennessee have been)

"It's [been] very valuable – I think anytime you get an opportunity to go against another team – especially a very good team -- a playoff team last year – to get some quality work, I think it's best to take advantage of it. They've got some really good players – competition was high so it's good to go out there and get some good work [in]."

(On how much the Tennessee cornerbacks challenged him during joint practices)

"They did a good job – they were playing physical, and they do a really good job competing – they're going to finish through the whistle. So, it really trains us to – once we make the catch, to make sure we're finishing and secure the ball."

(On the intensity level during today's practice)

"I can definitely tell you that the intensity was much higher today – I feel like it always is on the second day of joint practices, especially in the heat like this, tempers can get going. Guys are just competitors, so I don't think there was anything out of the norm, it didn't really escalate to anything which is good. Like I said, it cranked up the intensity which is better for all of us as the practice went along."

LINEBACKER DEVIN WHITE

(On putting more effort and energy into practice knowing starters won't play Saturday)

"We know we have to get geared up for a lot of practice reps against those guys – the starters. Our coach told us every day to treat it like a game. They got a lot of big runs on us yesterday and we went back to the drawing board like it was a halftime and we came back out and fitted those plays up and [were] able to basically be us in the running game. Everybody knows who we are in the running game."

(On some players on the defensive line being over 30 years old)

"I just wanted to say thank you to those guys for putting their bodies on the line for me and Lavonte [David] behind them. Also, [Bruce Arians] and (Head Athletic Trainer) Bobby [Slater] – they do a huge job with them. B.A. gives them a lot of rest time – a lot of time to let their bodies heal. Bobby, him and his staff do a great job with those guys as far as recovery. We have the people in place to make those guys go out there and perform at a high level at an older age."

(On OLB Joe Tryon)

"Right now, so far, he's just a relentless effort guy. That was the kind of guy I was as a young guy before I started learning even more. I would think if I don't know everything, I am going to go full speed and let my effort in and let itself take over. That's basically what he's doing right now but he has a great coach in Coach Larry Foote. I think eventually the game will slow down and he'll be able to use those intangibles with his coaching. I would say that's the number one thing. That's what separates the boys from the men are the ones that can take great coaching. His coach played the game at a high level for a long time and won Super Bowls. So, if he can take the constructive criticism from him and apply it to his game, I think the sky is the limit for him. He has two great Pro Bowlers and All-Pros in front of him (Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul) that he can learn from as well, so his job is really easy right now."

(On what they need to work on before the first game against Dallas)

"As far as the defensive side of the ball, the number one thing we need to accomplish is being consistent. We can't get punched in the mouth and then decide we want to punch back. We have to come out there like we already got punched even before the game starts. Whatever it takes for us to do that to be able to start fast – we have to find out what it's going to take and we have to start doing it and we've got to start prepping on it now. Those guys are going to come in fired up and everybody knows we're going to get everybody's best shot. Last year, I felt like we were doing the hunting and this year we're being hunted for sure. We have to come out there hands up, ready to fight."
