TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 9-9-24

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On the health status of the defensive backs)

"Bryce [Hall] is definitely out. We'll see about [Josh] Hayes, we'll see about Zyon [McCollum], and then obviously 'Win' (Antoine Winfield Jr.) was in a boot – we'll see about him later on this week, as well."

(On if there have been X-Rays done on CB Josh Hayes)

"It hasn't come back yet. He got his late this morning."

(On when S Antoine Winfield Jr. got injured)

"He got hurt on one of the last two plays of the game in regulation. He was on the onside [kick] team and he couldn't go out there for the onside [kick] team. He's pretty sore. We'll see how he feels."

(On if the Buccaneers will look outside the organization for potential replacements)

"We'll see how these guys do. Eventually, we'll work some out. If we need to get somebody, we'll get somebody."

(On if CB Bryce Hall's injury is season ending)

"I haven't heard all of that, but from what I know, it's probably season ending."

(On if CB Bryce Hall will require surgery)

"I'm pretty sure he [will]."

(On if any players have cross-trained at cornerback and might play there due to necessity)

"As far as I know, I'm sure some of them played it in high school, but we'll work out some guys. If we need to get a corner, we'll get one."

(On how he felt the defense did in terms of generating pressures)

"I don't think we pressured as much as we typically do, because of who [Jayden Daniels] was and our corner situation – we had to cover a lot more. Without Calijah [Kancey] and Logan [Hall], that [took] some of the foot speed on the inside. We had better run [stopping] guys, but we couldn't chase him around as much as we wanted to, so he got out of the pocket it a little more. Not to let [Terry] McLaurin loose, we had to cover what we needed to cover."

(On when Kancey injured the calf)

"He aggravated it on Friday."

(On if Kancey and DL Logan Hall could return this week)

"We'll see."

(On what enabled QB Baker Mayfield to play as well as he did on Sunday)

"He was locked in. Guys did a good job. Liam [Coen] did a good job of dialing up plays for him. He threw it to the guys and let them run. If it wasn't there down the field, he threw it short; if it was there, he threw it down the field. They did a good job of blocking for him."

(On Chargers' Head Coach Jim Harbaugh saying NFL teams make the biggest jump from Week 1 to Week 2)

"I don't know if you make the biggest jump, but you've got to correct the things that you did wrong in Week 1. I think that's going to last all year. Week 1 is more of the unknown, where you don't know what they're going to do and they don't know what you're going to do and the penalties are high and they're focusing on a lot of things. You want to dial that stuff down, so as far as that stuff is concerned, hopefully that's the case."

(On the rotation between linebackers K.J. Britt and SirVocea Dennis)

"The exchange was fine. It's a good rotation between the two guys and then Lavonte [David] plays all of [the snaps]. It's a good rotation."

(On RB Bucky Irving and if he should get more carries compared to Rachaad White)

"The eyeball test tells me that we're going to need both of them this season. The holes have got to be there for Rachaad [White] at the same time. It opens up later in the game for Bucky, but that doesn't mean Rachaad is playing bad. Rachaad had a lot of receptions and he had some yards, receiving-wise. It kind of worked out for us and [we] had a good one-two punch. We'll need both of them the whole season."

(On what the key to getting by with three injured defensive linemen was)

"We were trying to shut down the run. A lot of those guys are run-oriented, playing-wise. We've got to get a better push in the pass rush from there. Those guys played in the preseason. [C.J.] Brewer has been here for two years now, if not a little longer than that. Obviously, Mike Greene has been here before – he got hurt last year and he's been here this year. [Ben] Stille is probably the new guy who's still learning, but we have faith in those guys playing football. They're probably not as quick as Logan [Hall] and not as quick as [Calijah] Kancey, but they played some good ball."

(On if distributing the ball to a myriad of offensive weapons will be this team's calling card in 2024)

"Hopefully. It's got to be different guys that step up every week, whether it's the run game or the pass game. It's going to be different people stepping up and we hope everybody contributes."

(On the performance of the offensive line)

"For the first game, I mean…We've got to make progress. We did a lot of good things. There are some things we can clean up. It's not going to be clean all the way around – that's what the first game is for. They put together good drives in the second half, especially to close the game out early on. They let a stunt or two get through there, but overall, they played well."

(On the team's third-down efficiency)

"It kept drives going. It kept drives going. When you can be efficient on third down and you don't give up many third downs, you're going to win a lot of ballgames."

(On if he will continue to play DB Christian Izien at outside cornerback moving forward)

"We'll see where [Antoine] Winfield [Jr.] is first – if [he can't go, Izien is], he's going to have to play safety. We'll see where that is."

(On if he watched the Detroit Lions last night and what he sees about that team)

"I definitely didn't stay up that late. I stayed up enough to eat dinner and go to bed, because I knew I'd have to watch them all day today. They're very balanced, they're very strong up front. They can beat you both ways – running the ball or throwing the ball. They're a very physical team, very fast on the outside, very fast in the backfield, very athletic at tight end. They can beat you a bunch of ways. They don't have one way to beat you. You've got to be sharp on all accounts."

(On what's enabled Lions' QB Jared Goff to have success against his defense)

"They've played well. He's got a lot of weapons. They've played well and we haven't. I give him credit."

(On if he's ever been a part of a team that has lost so many players at a single position)

"I've been [in] different positions where they've been hurt before. We've got guys who've got to step up. A couple of years ago, our corners were down and we had [Dee] Delaney and Pierre Desir and a lot of guys step up in that situation. You make this team for a reason. Guys have got to play. We have to see something in them for them to make this team, and they've got to go out there and play."

(On CB Tyrek Funderburk)

"I thought he needed a week to get in shape – to get back in football shape. If he has to play this week, I'm very comfortable with him playing. We think he's a very good football player, he just hasn't been out there yet."

(On OLB Joe Tryon-Shoyinka's performance)

"I thought Joe did well – he did a lot of things well yesterday. [There are] some things he can do better, but he did a lot of things well. It must have been the haircut."

RUNNING BACK BUCKY IRVING

(On what it felt like playing his first NFL regular season game)

"It's always great to contribute for the team. We had a good week of practice leading up to the game [and] I always feel like you're going to practice how you play. I mean, I had a decent week of practice. [I'm] trying to translate all my runs into the game, so I pretty much feel good out there."

(On hearing the crowd doing 'Bucky' chants after his big run late in the game)
"It was great. It was a great experience – hearing the fans cheering my name [and] welcoming me into Tampa. I mean, it's always a blessing to hear those types of things in the crowd."

(On if his first NFL game was everything that he dreamed of)
"Yeah. I mean, you get a little emotional. It's something that you always dreamed about, but I always go by, 'You shouldn't take this game for granted.' So, every time I go out there and compete for the Buccaneers, I go out there and do it at a high level."

(On being so decisive as a running back and what allows him to hit those holes and attack so quickly)

"Film study, [and] I see, at this level – you have no time to pitter-pat your feet. You have to hit it when you see it, so I pretty much go by that. You have to trust what you see. You can get different looks in practice and there's also going to be different looks in games, but you have to see how the defense is playing you. I pretty much [think] when I get the ball, I trust what my eyes see and I hit the hole."

(On what his thoughts are entering Week 2 against the Detroit Lions)

"I pretty much caught up on some of the game last night. Those guys are pretty good. [It's] a pretty loud environment. I asked a couple guys on how it was going [up] there, but we just have to get back to work, put this game to bed and get ready for Detroit."
