TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 9-25-24

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On T Luke Goedeke returning to practice)

"He's limited. He's feeling a lot better. He did some individual stuff. He's got to do more as the week goes on for us to evaluate him."

(On if Goedeke is still in the concussion protocol)

"Yes."

(On the status of NT Vita Vea)

"He's trying to get back. He's feeling a little better. We're going to see how much he can do."

(On the status of DL Calijah Kancey)

"He didn't practice today."

(On if it is unlikely that Kancey or S Antoine Winfield Jr. will play Sunday)

"Not sure yet – I'll get a better grasp at the end of the week."

(On if there were commonalities in the sacks surrendered in the second half in Week 3)

"There wasn't a commonality. I mean, we've got to get rid of the ball better and we've got to block it better. As a whole, offensively, and as a team we've got to get better. We didn't play our best and they played well."

(On if the reason the team has brought in multiple new punters in the past few weeks is a result of Jake Camarda's hangtime or distance)

"A little bit of both at times. At times, he can boom one. At times, he's inconsistent. He's got to be more consistent."

(On how the team responded today in practice to get the 'bad taste out of their mouths' from Sunday)

"It was out on Monday. We had a good practice. We have a 24-hour rule. They came out and they flew around. We're trying to get the gameplan down so we can be ready to play."

(On how much Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley has elevated his new team)

"I mean, they were already a good team before they got him. Once they got him – he's one of the top two or three running backs in the league right now. You put that behind one of the top two or three offensive lines and you're going to have nothing but success. Then, they've got the receivers and tight end to match, so he's going to be a load to bring down. He's got quick feet, he's powerful, he's fast, he can catch, he can block, he can do it all."

(On the emphasis he is placing on swarming to the football this week)

"We got to the ball – we had two guys on one [and] he made both of them miss. We've got to tackle better. We're getting to the ball, we've just got to tackle better, and we understand that as a defense. That's one of the biggest areas we're looking for improvement in."

(On why the team wasn't as physical or sound in their tackling in Week 3 like they were the week prior vs. Detroit)

"Well, we missed some against Detroit, as well – we just made more than we missed. We didn't miss as many this game, but we missed some key ones, that one being the fourth down one. The guy (Denver Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin) is a heck of a back, he got 'Nelly' (Anthony Nelson) in space, he made a heck of a move and K.J. [Britt] tried to reach out and get him and he couldn't get him either. Sometimes the other guy is just better. Other times, we've got to swarm to the ball in terms of who is inside and who is outside and understand where our help is."

(On the difference it makes in the Eagles' offense when they've got WR A.J. Brown on the field versus when they don't)

"I mean, they've got a lot of talent. Any time you've got a Pro Bowler that's not playing, you're going to miss something in them, but they've got enough talent with [DeVonta] Smith, [Dallas] Goedert and the rest of those guys that they can make plays, and they've been making plays. They won a tough game down in New Orleans, they're a tough team and, like everybody this year, [they're] dealing with injuries [so] they're going to do without until they get them back."

(On if allowing another team to be more physical is a mental issue or a physical one)

"It wasn't a mental thing – it's more about making mistakes, not being where we wanted and [not] playing as fast as we needed to play."

(On how the potential incoming hurricane affects the practice week moving forward)

"Well, it definitely puts us inside. Right now, the schedule is the same. It may change the meetings in the afternoon as far as making it up on Friday with an extra hour or so, but we will definitely be inside if the weather changes and we'll see how bad it gets."

(On the difficulty of moving on to the next play mentally as a defensive back)

"I don't think it's difficult – you've got to concentrate on your technique and fundamentals. You've got to have short-term memory, especially out there on the corner [position]. You can go play 50 plays without getting any action and then if you get one or two and you blow it, you don't play a great game no matter what else you did. He (Zyon McCollum) has got to have short-term memory. He's got to let it go right after the play and just lock in and focus."

(On how CB Zyon McCollum responded later in the Week 3 game vs. Denver after allowing an early completion)

"Other than that play, I thought he played well."

(On what it's going to take to get the run game going offensively and if Bucky Irving has earned the right to be the starter)

"As far as the running game is going, everybody has got to do their job from coaches to players, receivers, tight ends, offensive line, running backs. At the same time, we're going to need Bucky and Rachaad [White] all year. Bucky has some scheme runs that worked and Rachaad had some that didn't. That doesn't mean he is playing better – that means we couldn't get the [holes] open when we had Rachaad back there. We're going to use them both all year. How they play and how much they play will change every game, so it's going to be no different."

(On Eagles QB Jalen Hurts taking greater responsibility at the line of scrimmage following the retirement of former center Jason Kelce)

"I think he is doing a great job. They understand the offense because he has been in it a while now. So, a couple years in, he's got a good grasp of what they're trying to do. Obviously, Kellen [Moore] added some things, as well, to make the offense a little more multiple that way. He is handling everything well."

(On what needs to happen to get the pass rush going)

"We need to get going on in the interior when the outside guys get a good rush. When Vita [Vea] went down, we didn't have as much on the inside, but there's not an excuse. We've got to rush the passer no matter who is playing. I don't really care whether it's four guys, five guys, six guys, whether they're all backups or whether they're all starters, or whatever the case may be. We've got to get to the quarterback better."

(On how rookie center Graham Barton has handled the mental aspect of his position)

"Graham is playing well – that's why he is starting. Mentally, he is grasping a lot of things, and we expect that when we start a rookie center. We understand that all going in. We don't have any excuses for him. He's out there with the starters, he is out there to do a job, we like the job he is doing right now and he's going to be better and better."

(On if he was disappointed that QB Baker Mayfield didn't take more chances down the field in Week 3)

"It was disappointing that we couldn't block enough for him to get it down the field. Then we couldn't get the run game going so they could sit back all day and didn't give us those shots, as well. We've got to do a better job overall getting our game going up front so we can take those type of shots down the field."

QUARTERBACK BAKER MAYFIELD

(On how he balances spreading the ball around and if he tries to get WR Mike Evans more involved on offense)

"[I] definitely just try to get him going early, early and often, just to get him involved. You want to look at your priority calls early on and try to get all of our guys a touch at least, just to get them going, and then let the defense still dictate where the ball needs to go but then understanding one-on-one matchups, understanding who Mike is. So yeah, just trusting that [and] getting him the ball."

(On what problems he saw on film and how he plans to fix them)

"I mean, we lost this last week. There's always stuff to work on, but just getting the ball out, being efficient with it and improvements in the run game, getting on the same page and having a really good plan, feeling really confident with it and just making sure we put in the same fire that we had the first couple of weeks."

(On WR Chris Godwin coming through for the offense)

"I say it over and over again – [that's the] definition of consistency for him, and Mike [Evans], as well. The amount of years they've done it in a row, and Chris is a reliable guy. [You] say it enough – it's how smart he is, understanding the defense and the coverages, understanding what we're trying to get done within our own concepts and [he's] a guy that is all about winning. He's playing really well, [he] feels good [and] we have to keep him going."

(On how difficult it is as a QB to not know where pressure is coming from)

"There's a fine line of trusting the timing of your feet, and you know – like I said after the game on Sunday, some of those in the second half were definitely on me. [I was] getting a little bit antsy, not trusting it as much – so just trusting the timing of my footwork and delivering the ball, going through the reads true to what they are, and then if I have to make a play, [I'll] make a play from there or throw it away. So yeah, there's things that everybody can do to contribute to that."

(On how he fights the urge to be antsy as a QB)

"Slowing it down. For me, slowing it down mentally, going through my reads a little bit slower, not letting the rush speed up my timing, my reads, going through it true to what it is and to go from there."

(On how the team has responded in practice so far this week after a loss)

"Good. I wouldn't expect anything else from this group but to handle it – take this one on the chin. Like we said, the Broncos outplayed us. They brought the fire and the passion that we didn't have, and it'll be good for us to get back out there on Sunday."

(On how they plan to match the energy that Philadelphia will bring on Sunday)

"Obviously, you have to expect it. [You] have to expect [that] they're coming off a big win in New Orleans, and just the type of team they are. We obviously played them twice last year – having familiarity with who they are as personnel and a coaching staff – obviously new coordinators, but personnel wise, [they're] a lot of the same pieces. So, understanding the challenges that they bring and the mentality of how physical they play. We each have to bring our best stuff on Sunday and that's each and every week, but especially this week."

(On the things he's doing this week to prepare the team for the Eagles)

"Not to take it for granted, but I think we learned our lesson on how detailed we need to be [and] how focused within… It doesn't matter who we're playing. We have to try to set the standard within ourselves each week. It's just a matter of relaying it back and forth with the guys and bringing everybody back to the fundamentals, basic details, and that's the Bucs brand of football, so we need to play like that."

(On how he hasn't thrown that many deep passes and if he had planned to)

"Yes and no. There's some that they did a good job of taking a lot of the deep shots and playing top-down coverage and making me be patient. That's why in the second half you saw a lot more completions up tempo, just getting the ball out. That's a part of letting the defense dictate where the ball needs to go. If they're not going to have the deep shots available, then you need to take the short stuff until they get aggressive."

(On if he felt unprepared going into last Sunday vs the Broncos)

"No. [We] just have to translate it [and] bring it on Sundays. There's not a week that I don't feel good about our preparation, about the guys' work ethic, the plan. [We] just have to bring it – have to translate it to Sundays and not expect it to just happen."

(On what it would mean to have T Luke Goedeke back this week)

"Obviously, getting Luke back would be huge for us. Obviously within the pass game but the run game, as well. I don't think he gets enough credit for the type of mauler offensive lineman that he really is. He's improved a ton in the pass protection aspect of it but in the run game, he's huge for us."

(On if he is prepared for the hurricane)

"As I'm learning here, you kind of wait to see the direction of the storm and go from there. Obviously, [my] thoughts and prayers [are] with everybody. It's going to be a tough storm for a lot of people. You have to play it safe; you have to be smart and listen to the mandates if you need to."
