TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 8-3-24

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On what he liked about today's practice)

"Really, for the young guys, just trying to get acclimated to how fast the game is going to be, making checks and lining up the right way. It was a great mental day for us. We've still got walk-throughs and everything tomorrow, and then they get a day [off] after that. We'll get ready for next week in Cincinnati."

(On the status of DB Tykee Smith, who left Saturday's practice early)

"He tweaked his ankle a little bit."

(On the things he is most and least pleased with so far in training camp)

"The penalties are a work in progress. We've got to get that taken care of. After being in camp for a week, you've got to get used to the pads, you've got to get used to the heat and then you've got to carry out your assignment. That's a work in progress. I'm really pleased with the mental approach these guys have come in with. We haven't had any sloppy days. We've had mental errors, but we haven't had any sloppy days. Guys are locked in and they're trying to get better."

(On how the special teams staff is handling the new kickoff rule)

"I can let you know after the Cincinnati game."

(On QB Kyle Trask's performance so far in training camp)

"I think Kyle [Trask] is having a heck of a camp. Yeah, he missed a few today – you've got to make those. You've got to make the big plays. Running the offense and understanding it, we're very comfortable with where Kyle is right now. He is making great strides for us, and we're pleased."

(On how well Kalen DeLoach has picked up the mental part of being an inside linebacker in Bowles' defense)

"He picked up the basics. He has still got to pick up the small integral things to get going. Obviously, it goes faster when you're in there with the first unit – there's a lot more adjustments and a lot more things to do. But he's coming along, he's coming along."

(On what the team likes about WR Rakim Jarrett)

"Well, he's polished, he's got speed, and he can run all the routes. He's very shifty after he catches the ball – he's just got to be more consistent. Some days he flashes [and] some days you don't see him. He's just got to be consistent in everything he's doing."

(On if any of the young tight ends have stood out in training camp)

"Well, Ko [Kieft] is back healthy so he's blocking. [Devin] Culp made a few plays today – he's just got to be consistent, especially with his route running. Just learning a new system has been an adjustment, so he's got to continue to get better. Obviously, the other guys are still coming along."

CORNERBACK BRYCE HALL

(On how he feels at the end of the second week of training camp)

"Pretty good. Being in Florida talking about the heat, this, that, and the third. [It] felt like it was a smooth transition just in terms of being in shape and everything, learning the defense. We've got a really good group of guys. I am having fun. I am enjoying the process [of] just learning and growing and finding out a little bit more about myself, just as every camp presents new challenges and new things. It is just fun. This is why we play the game of football. I am enjoying it. "

(On whether matching up against WR Mike Evans and WR Chris Godwin in practice helps to improve his skills)

"Absolutely. Those are two of the top guys in football in general. With Godwin, he's very smart, and Evans [is] the same thing. He's very crafty, [and] very skilled. So, just any time you get to go up against him is huge. [It] just slows the game down, in general. Because when you line up against him, you are like, 'Okay, I [have] got to be on my A-game.' So, I think it just elevates everybody else."

(On becoming comfortable in Tampa Bay's defense)

"It is starting to get more comfortable. I think the key is just being on your details because with a lot of different calls, you [have] to be sharp and make sure. I think, for me, it's like the more I learn the defense, the more I know where the spots are, where the help is, [and] how to play to the strengths and weaknesses. I think what's really fun is when you understand the defense, [then] Coach Bowles [will] put us in [a] position to make a lot of plays. For us, it is just understanding the details. The sharper we are on that, the more plays we'll be able to make. I think that's going to be the fun part, just as we grasp it, being able to take our shots, understanding where our help is, where our help isn't. Then, I think the plays will come after that."

(On finding his voice with new teammates while on the field)

"I am one of those people on the field where I'm going to be loud, and if I am wrong, then we will get on the same page because I would rather talk and then be wrong versus not talk at all. For me, I feel like that's helped. Also, I feel like we have a really good, tight-knit group [of] players on this team. Overall, just all the players. It is very much of a brotherhood. That helps on the field, too. When I am talking to my guys out there, it is like, 'Okay, we can go back and forth.' It is not like you are just talking to a stranger out there. I think that's been helpful. [I have been] just building that bond and that connection with the brothers."

RUNNING BACK RACHAAD WHITE

(On how camp is going so far)

"Camp is camp. It's there now. You know, first couple of days, you know how it [is]. Like [you're] going to school… [the] first few days of school [you're] happy, excited, then you get into camp and you're like 'alright.' You're in [the] dog days, so you just have to keep pushing and I [saw] something that Lavonte [David] said about our team camaraderie, our chemistry, the guys we've got in this building and us being great. So, we've been leaning on one another and all getting through it."

(On the offensive linemen improving athletically)

"That's huge. That's huge man. We've got some big O lineman that took care of themselves. They all gained weight but all [were] still able to move and get out in space and that's the biggest thing. I think they all have that attitude and they're very nasty, so yeah. Just to be able to, as a running back, get outside and get out in space with them in front of you. Like you said, when I had a couple screens last year it was just like daylight. You just see daylight and you just take it. I think [on] one of the screens, Cody [Mauch] was right next to me for a minute, so it was crazy to see, but it's amazing."

(On whether he sees himself as a power runner or a swift runner)

"I like my game to be balanced, so when I need to be [powerful], I'll be [powerful]. When I need to be swift and smooth, I'll be smooth. I would say I'm a bigger [running] back than a lot of people are accustomed to, so it's just difference. You have to know when to be power and when to be smooth and swift and be able to get in and out of things."

(On having to be able to run, catch and block as a running back)

"Yeah, you have to be able to do everything to be today's every-down back, to be today's what you call – bell-cow back. A lot of guys try to pride themselves on being able to not have their coach take them off the field for not being able to do [something]."

(On having the other running backs to spell him on some touches)

"It would help out a lot. I wouldn't say that it's not – I'll be out here sometimes where I feel like I'm dragging. I talk to Chase [Edmonds]… still my guy, and he'll be like 'No, bro you're not dragging. [You're] fine.' I'll be making excuses like 'Yeah, [those] 300 touches are catching up to me. I'm getting old, I'm this,' and Chase will be like, 'Stop it, bro. I'm in year seven bro. [You're] not old at all, like you're not getting old.' We just joke around [and] play like that. But for sure, to have them back there, him and Bucky [Irving], and for them to be able to spare me, of course, is key. When you set goals and you want to have the stats that you want to have, and when you want to get in the conversations that – because I peep everything – when you want to get into conversations of, you know, being one of the best [running] backs in the league, it's going [to] come with like 300 touches, though, at the end of the day. You just brace your body as much as possible but you for sure have to have guys behind you that rally behind you and [are] able to spell you in key moments."

(On being able to have the long runs in the fourth quarter due to relief early on)

"Yeah, it'll be huge. Obviously, my big emphasis [over] everything, and our team's big emphasis is we have to start fast this year on both sides of the ball. Obviously, we've been starting slow. I mean I could go back to since I was a rookie, we've been starting slow so our biggest emphasis is, we've got to start fast and that will take you down the stretch and then in the fourth quarter it's all about will. Like you said, I've had a lot of success in the fourth quarter, and then, just all the stuff like that, my numbers have been successful, and you know, I can't complain. I'm just grinding it out."
