HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On Jacksonville WR Brian Thomas Jr. performing well against the Buccaneers over the last two practices)
"He's a great receiver, that's why he's a first-round pick. We know he's got a lot of speed, he's got a lot of talent – we're going to face [that] every week, those types of guys. We've just got to play the deep ball."
(On how he feels the defense responded in today's practice)
"I was on the offensive side – I have not seen the tape yet. I can let you know later on."
(On if there's an update on the status of TE Payne Durham and CB Tyrek Funderburk)
"No, Funderburk has a foot, he's day-to-day. Same as Payne, he has a knee."
(On how he felt the offense looked today compared to yesterday)
"We did better in the communication department. Out of pads, it's hard to be physical. We can't turn the ball over – we turned the ball over a couple of times. From a physical, mental standpoint, I thought we got better."
(On a touchdown pass from QB Kyle Trask to WR Trey Palmer in today's practice)
"It would have been a great play if he wasn't sacked."
(On how hard it is to get a quarterback ready to play with the limited preseason action they might see)
"I don't think it's hard to get them ready to play. Between the practices against the opposition and the practices against ourselves, he should be ready to play and [have] seen everything. It's just the timing and the mental part that they've all got to get down and get used to playing 60-something plays a game as opposed to 30 or 25 in practice."
(On Tampa Bay's run defense during these two joint practices)
"Yesterday, when they were aligned right, they did a good job. There were some plays where they were aligned wrong and gave up the edge too easily, just because of alignment. For the most part, they're where they're supposed to be."
(On if he likes what he's seen from Tampa Bay's run defense)
"So far. It's been more passing than running. We haven't seen the runs that we know we're going to see and the different personnel groupings in those runs. So far, they've been good at what we've been seeing."
(On what the two days of joint practices have told him about his team)
"They're mentally tough. Yesterday was a hot day and they took a lot of plays. Today, they came back out mentally understanding what they have to do – we just have to execute. They all stood together, they all came out ready to work. We're getting ready for the grind of the season."
(On OLB Chris Braswell's development)
"Braswell has been excellent since he's come on with Joe [Tryon-Shoyinka] and Yaya [Diaby] having been down. The experience and the leaps and bounds in which he gets better by the day, he's been one of the more pleasant surprises here since we've been up here in Jacksonville. He keeps getting better and better. I love the things he's doing and love where he's at."
QUARTERBACK BAKER MAYFIELD
(On his assessment of the two days of joint practices)
"Today was more execution, I thought yesterday, I think everybody kind of hit on the energy. The schedule we had wasn't exactly the normal routine. Today, the energy and focus was a lot better – now, it's just execution. You're going to have those days in practice. For us, offensively, it's not like we were trying to game plan against these guys during practice, so there [are] going to be some plays where you just have to take care of the ball and move on – like you do in games. You don't exactly know what they're going to run, what blitzes or coverages…For us, just executing better. I think when we ran the ball, it looked pretty good. Today [there were] just too many balls on the ground, too many tipped passes that ended up in their hands. For us, execution and taking care of the ball are the most important things. I thought it was a good two days. We'll carry that in. Now the preparation for these guys that are going to play is going to kick in and they've got to go show their stuff."
(On getting prepared for the full slate of the season despite limited acclimation time in the preseason)
"I've played enough ball at this point that you know what a game day feels like, you know what that preparation and the whole week leading up to it feels like. Luckily, we're in Florida heat and we're used to having to deal with longer days. Honestly, game days, we're kind of spoiled. We've got the cold benches and all that, we've got the TV timeouts, we've got a lot of cold beverages on the sidelines. For us, it's just a matter of staying mentally in it all day when it comes to practice and meetings. In games, you have to stay locked in until the clock hits zero. For me, it's getting back in the swing of things and constantly communicating through these days…We're going to have to constantly be communicating on game day, so why not do it now in camp, especially when we're going up against a different opponent with different looks."
(On how he addresses dropped passes with teammates)
"This is one of the things I learned early on. The worst thing you can tell a guy is to catch the damn ball. It's not like he's trying to drop it. When it comes down to it, you look at, 'Okay, did he take his eyes off of it? Did he have his hands in the right position?' You look at the fundamentals of back to the basics of catching the football and where they went wrong on that. Everybody knows they're trying to catch the ball. Most of the time, it's a lack of complete focus through the catch. You've got to pluck it and tuck it. Those are just the little things you've got to do, especially when you're playing against these guys that are going to come in. There are going to be collisions, they're going to be swiping for the balls. For me, it's, 'Hey, make sure you look it in all through the catch until you tuck it.' That's it."
(On if he was focused on any particular part of his game during these joint practices)
"Yeah, for me, timing and anticipation on some of these routes that we've been dialing up against our defense – just the concepts of expecting the guys to be in certain spots. I'd say today was a little bit early. They don't pressure as much as our defense does, so that's a good and bad thing. We're so used to having to get the ball out quickly against our guys, but also, when it comes down to a game plan and playing other teams, it's a little bit more of a simple look. I'm going to have to slow it down a little bit and consistently deliver the ball at the right spots. Today, I think was just okay in that aspect."
(On his chemistry with WR Mike Evans)
"For Mike and I, it's the constant communication. Obviously, he's going to win on a lot of his routes – that just is who he is. For me, understanding and talking to him about how he's thinking he's going to win on different leverages. Obviously, with time and experience and more reps, that continues to grow, but I just think we're in a very good spot, the two of us right now. It's the same with Chris [Godwin] as well. Obviously, Chris is feeling better and better about where he's at physically…Chris is an unbelievable communicator and a pro's pro. Those two guys, [I'm] constantly talking to them about, 'Hey, if we get this look, what are you going to do? How are you going to run it?' Just making sure we're on the same page. I feel really good about where we're at."
(On if he feels WR Chris Godwin feels more comfortable back in the slot)
"Absolutely. You can tell he's excited to do a lot of that stuff. Obviously, from those guys watching the L.A. [Rams] system – and a lot of our install tape is that L.A. system – and watching Cooper [Kupp] and honestly last year with Puka [Nacua] as well and seeing all the different things he can do. That's the stuff Chris does best – playing physical through the catch, tight spaces, being able to have contested catches. Chris is an unbelievable team guy – he's going to get dirty in the run game, as well. He understands his role on this team and it's extremely important."
(On the pass protection from the offensive line over the last two joint practices)
"Really solid. I'd say, obviously, they've got a couple of book ends on the edge there, but I thought it was really solid for us. Obviously, it's tough when you [don't have] pads on, but yesterday, I thought it was really good. I thought they passed off some stunts and games really well on the inside. They're just continuing to improve [with] the more reps they get."
(On WR Kameron Johnson's progress throughout training camp)
"Kam Johnson is a stud. I didn't even know where Barton College was until like a few weeks ago. Whatever they fed him, it worked. He's a polished receiver. He doesn't say much, he locks in, and just does everything the right way. For us, it's a kid that listens. [When] you bring in the physical aspect of it, he's extremely smooth in his routes, he's explosive – I think he can do a lot of things for us. He's another good guy in our room that's going to push everybody else to continue to raise that standard in the [wide] receiver room."
