HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES
(On his overall assessment of the first joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars)
"I spent most of the time on the offense, so I'll look at the defense as we go forward. I thought we had some plays. I think there are some things we've got to get better at. As the guys that didn't play get more reps and the sun comes out, we need to get in better shape there – mentally and physically – [to be] ready to play. I thought they fought hard."
(On if there's an update on the status of TE Payne Durham)
"Not yet. It's a knee. They're still running tests – I'll find out more later."
(On how QB Baker Mayfield played today)
"He had some plays he threw in there, he had some you'd like to have back. Obviously, [it is a] very good defensive front you're going against right there. I've got to see the tape to be sure, but he ran the offense well."
(On the energy level at practice today)
"I thought the energy was good late. I thought in between, they were struggling to catch their breath a little bit, but that was probably both sides. We've got to be better. As they get more plays, they've got to be better."
(On if there's an update on when DL Calijah Kancey might return to practice)
"Not at this time, no."
(On there being no fighting during Wednesday's joint practice and if that's surprising)
"No, I mean there was some good work done. Doug [Pederson] runs a good program, we try to run a good program. There was some good work done on both sides. We got to see a different scheme and that's what we're trying to do. We're trying to make each other better. Physicality is part of the sport, but we did a good job of taking care of each other today."
(On if there was a reason that wide receivers and defensive backs did not do one-on-one drills)
"We had one-on-one pass rush, but we didn't have one-on-one [defensive backs] against wide receivers. They're a little banged up, we're a little banged up, and it's a little warm out here. We got more of that in seven-on-seven – we got more plays there."
(On LB J.J. Russell's motor)
"He has a motor. He's intelligent, he knows the defense now, so he's taking advantage of his opportunity."
(On the biggest takeaway that he's looking for during joint practices)
"The biggest thing is fundamentals and technique – what people see our weaknesses are and what we can gather and gain from it and change some of our schemes on both sides of the ball."
(On how pleased he was that there was no fighting during practice)
"It was football, it was good football – there was physicality up front. Everybody took care of each other. We don't need to fight to play good football."
(On dropped passes from the wide receiver position in practice today)
"Yeah, we had quite a few drops. That's what I'm talking about [in terms of] getting more reps and being mentally and physically tougher for opening day. We probably dropped too many that we shouldn't have."
(On the status of WR Kameron Johnson)
"He's in a [non-contact] jersey right now but he's running around at full speed. When the trainers tell me he can take it off and he's healed, I'll know."
(On if there was a particular reason that he watched the offense mostly today)
"No, Doug [Pederson] is on one field and I'm on the other field. We've got to make sure we keep it monitored. I get to watch the defensive tape about five or six more times anyway, so it's good for me to watch the offense."
(On if he watched the pass-rush drills today)
"I didn't watch the pass rush – I was on the other field. I didn't see it yet."
SAFETY ANTOINE WINFIELD JR.
(On if the team practiced with the energy that they wanted)
"I feel like we started a little flat. As practice went on, we got better, so, I'm looking forward to tomorrow. Now we know what we have to do."
(On going up against a different team at practice)
"Solid day. You know, it's great work for us – to go and see a different opponent, some different guys, different faces. It's always fun work going against another team, and just the energy and the juice of it – it's fun."
(On everyone being on the same page in terms of taking care of each other at joint practices)
"Yeah, 100%. You want to take care of everybody. Everybody wants to make it to the season [at] 100% so, you know, we're out here working against each other but we're also making sure that we're not killing each other out here."
(On being mindful of keeping everyone safe at joint practices)
"Yeah – no fights. This is probably the cleanest joint practice I've seen, so, it was a good day."
(On where he thinks the defense has made the most progress so far during training camp)
"I think just being comfortable with one another, even like some of the new guys coming in… just being comfortable and then confident with what you're doing, and also communication comes with that. I feel like overall, all around, we've been better in all areas."
(On the starters approaching the joint practices with game energy due to the preseason games being more of a rest)
"One hundred percent. This is a game for us because we might not be playing in all of the preseason games, but this is a game for us… game speed, game mentality, so we have to come out here and actually execute what we're doing."
(On what he thinks of S Kaevon Merriweather)
"[He's] a great player. He's flying around. He's more comfortable in the scheme, and he's out here having fun, so, you know, hat's off to Kaevon."
(On what he and the defense should take from todays practice and carry it over to tomorrow)
"I would say the physicality and mentality that we had towards the end of practice. I feel like as practice went on, we kind of juiced it up, so making sure we come out here tomorrow with that first, instead of waiting [until] the third or fourth period to get to that mentality."
(On the strides that S Tykee Smith has made throughout training camp)
"He's been doing a phenomenal job, especially picking up our defense. You know, it's loaded. He's doing a great job. He's running with the ones, and getting things like that, so, he's picking up fast."
(On which teammate is leading and communicating in the huddle)
"K.J. [Britt]. K.J. is the loudest guy on the field – always talking, but he works. He works hard, so I love having him down there at linebacker."
