TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS QUOTE SHEET 10-28-24

HEAD COACH TODD BOWLES

(On specifically what's not happening on defense and if he would consider another defensive play caller other than himself)

"What's not happening is we have about four or five plays a game where we either miss a tackle or we're not dropping where we're supposed to and we give up a big play. I'll continue to call plays."

(On how he plans to change things if the personnel and play calling stays the same)

"We look at personnel changes every week and see what's best for us. Sometimes we can't do anything but we're doing everything this week to try to put the guys out on the field that will hopefully help us get better and kind of go from there. If we don't have them, we don't have them, but if we have them on the team, we'll definitely try to put them in there."

(On why he hasn't tried another inside linebacker on passing downs)

"There's probably only one [player] that can do it and he has to get caught up to speed. At the time, he wasn't caught up to speed. Everybody else was more of a MIKE linebacker or pretty much the same from an athletic standpoint and K.J. [Britt] was the smartest of the bunch."

(On if the capable linebacker he mentioned is LB Kalen DeLoach)

"I was talking about Vi Jones."

(On what needs to happen in order for the opposing team's offense to feel pressure from Tampa Bay's defensive front))

"I think our edge guys have to be better at getting chipped and still understanding how to pressure the quarterback other than letting the chips knock them off their game a little bit and getting a little frustrated trying to force things. We have to do a better job of gaining it, we have to better job of learning when to get off the chip blocks."

(On what happened with the defense on Atlanta TE Kyle Pitts' first touchdown)

"Well, we busted the coverage and [Kaevon] Merriweather fell down as well, so there [were] two things that happened on that play."

(On if CB Josh Hayes is a potential option to start)

"Yeah, he's definitely an option."

(On if S Tykee Smith will be back for Monday night's game)

"He's progressing. We'll see how he feels during the week. It's a little early right now."

(On what QB Baker Mayfield has to do to produce fewer turnovers)

"Just understand when we're in scoring position and try not to force every ball. You know, sometimes it's not there, sometimes you can make a great throw but not force every ball and just get it to the guy that's open. Sometimes three points is better than a turnover."

(On why the offense didn't run the ball as much as the game progressed on Sunday)

"Some of the things they started doing kind of got us away from it a little bit and we started altering to some of the passing game."

(On why RB Rachaad White was the primary running back in the game for the last 12 minutes)

"He's the bigger of the three, he's probably the best pass protector of the three and he's great out of the back field as well and at the time we were behind trying to catch up. We just left him in as the best option."

(On if it's likely that RB Sean Tucker will have fewer snaps of the three running backs)

"I think it'll change every week. You know, when we got behind, that was probably less Tucker's thing but he's going to get more touches, he's going to get more plays and more reps."

(On if there are any other injury updates)

"Not at this time. A few guys got nicked up. They came back. Hopefully they get rest [for] a couple days and should be ready by Monday Night."

(On how he plans to go about finding the solutions and putting them on tape)

"You go back to basics. As coaches, you always go back to basics, fundamentals, and technique, and you start there. You start there, and you see what you did well [in] the first couple games of the season and you try to go back to that and see how far away you've gotten from it as a coach and as a player and try to get back to basics and doing things we do well."

(On if he plans on doing anything differently in practice and his thoughts on OC Liam Coen being able to put up 24 points without wide receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin)

"Well practice-wise, I mean we're doing everything we can do, those guys are playing hard, we just have to play smarter. We'll do some drills and we'll tweak some things that way. I thought Liam did a good job putting up points and manufacturing plays for guys that were down and the guys that were up did a heck of a job – [Rakim] Jarrett, 'JMac' (Jalen McMillan), [Sterling] Shepard, all of those guys did a heck of a job when they played out there. [Ryan] Miller, as well. We just have to continue to keep finding ways to score points and we have to find ways to stop people."

(On WR Rakim Jarrett's performance on Sunday)
"For him to come back off of surgery and only have practiced [for] the week and then come in and play and make some plays like that and some tough catches says a lot about him. He's a tough kid, he has outstanding hands in traffic and to come off an injury like that and not having practiced a full fall or summer and everything else, he did a heck of a job."

(On what makes Kansas City Head Coach Andy Reid a hard play caller to defend)

"He can do everything out of every personnel grouping. They can get in three, four tight ends, they can get in two, they can get in one, they can get none and he can run the exact same plays that he's running in all personnel groupings and that puts a stress on the personnel on the defensive side of the ball as well as putting guys in space that are not used to being in space."

(On how different the current Chiefs team is than some of the past teams they've had)

"They're playing great defense, No. 1. They have a heck of a ground game, they still have [Xavier] Worthy outside as speed and I think trying to defend three or four tight ends when you're not used to that – if you put small guys in, they'll line up in tight, they'll run it. If you put the big guys in, they'll spread you out and throw it so that makes it very difficult to defend as well as them running the football. They know how to win. They've been through it many times, they know how to win close games, they know how to win blowouts, so you're going to have to play a heck of a ball game to beat them."

(On what the offense needs to do to succeed against Kansas City's defense)

"We have to be able to run it some, we have to win time of possession. If we can keep their offense off the field and keep ours on the field and keep time of possession and then score, I think that gives us a good chance."
