We left the hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the waterfront to catch the ferry to Robben Island. We almost were not allowed to go to the island due to an oil spill just two days ago between the mainland and the island. The ferries were not running until this morning. Luckily, the ferries started running again and we headed over to Robben Island, which is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. We were given a guided tour by an ex-prisoner.
The waters were a little rough and we had several people get a little seasick, but it was nothing major. We had pizza at the mall for lunch and then we flew to Johannesburg. Once in Johannesburg, we had dinner in an African-style buffet (the first meal that did not go over so well with the group). Johannesburg is extremely different from Cape Town, and this was noticeable as soon as we got off the plane.
Our hotel check in was extremely smooth and we are all in for the night. Tomorrow morning, we visit Soweto, then we'll take a little time in the afternoon to rest. Several of our kids have already written home and sent postcards. Ciao for now!
