James Wilder was drafted by the Buccaneers in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft and played for the team up until 1989. During his time in Tampa, he amassed 5,957 yards, the most in team history. His 1,575 carries are also a Buccaneer record.
In 1984, Wilder carried the ball 407 times for 1,544 yards and 13 touchdowns, all career-highs, and was named to his first and only Pro Bowl. He added 685 receiving yards on 85 catches to surpass the 2,000-yard mark that season. Wilder fell just shy of O.J. Simpson's record for total yards from scrimmage in a season, a record that has since been broken.
Wilder played for the Redskins and Lions in 1990 and retired following that season.
