The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the visiting Washington Commanders, 37-20 in Week One. The home team came out firing on all cylinders and quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 24-of-30 attempts for 289 yards, four touchdowns and a 146.4 QBR. Chris Godwin spearheaded the attack with eight catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.

The Buccaneers first drive culminated in a Chase McLaughlin 56-yard field goal, giving the home team a 3-0 advantage. The Bucs started the game with an emphasis on getting their playmakers on the perimeter, including a five-yard gain by Rachaad White off a screen and an 11-yard pickup by Chris Godwin down the right boundary for a first down. Following an incompletion to Jalen McMillan on third down, Tampa Bay was forced to punt. Tampa Bay's defense followed suit by forcing a quick three-and-out. Jayden Daniels scrambled on third down but was pushed out of bounds by Jamel Dean short of the sticks.

The Bucs' ensuing offensive drive stalled at the 16 following two Mayfield scrambles. The possession was highlighted by an acrobatic leaping grab by Mike Evans for a gain of 24 yards as he broke to the outside, but the home team was unable to cash in with seven. At the end of the first quarter, the Commanders' drive was halted by an illegal block above the waist (10 yards enforced) at the Tampa Bay 19 and an incompletion to Olamide Zaccheaus on third down resulted in a 47-yard attempt by Cade York. His kick was wide right, keeping it a 6-0 game.

On the next drive, the Bucs found the end zone. A pair of 19-yard plays set up the score, including an out route by Trey Palmer and a screen by Rachaad White. Mike Evans capped off the eight-play, 63-yard drive by working over the top of the Commanders' defensive back to haul in the touchdown. Evans was being held and then some but managed to pluck the ball out of the air. The Commanders responded with a touchdown of their own. Following a 10-yard keeper by Daniels and an unnecessary roughness penalty (hit to the head) at the Tampa Bay 11-yard line, Washington took advantage with a Brian Robinson seven-yard touchdown rush.

Just before the half mark, on the Bucs' 13-play, 49-yard drive, Godwin served as the team's catalyst. Whether a 14-yard gain off a square-in or a nine-yard gain off a quick out, he became Mayfield's go-to target. Following an incompletion to Evans on third down after Mayfield was flushed out of the pocket, Tampa Bay had to settle for a McLaughlin 29-yard field goal. The Bucs scored on all of their first four possessions but had to lean on field goals for three. Mayfield's 84.2 completion percentage is the seventh-highest mark in the first half of a game in his career (minimum of 10 attempts).

Out of the half, the Commanders' drive stalled following a strip sack by Bucs' Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. He dropped Daniels for a loss of nine and knocked the ball loose. It was recovered by Commanders' Tyler Biadasz and Luke McCaffrey was stopped short of the first on third down by Jordan Whitehead and SirVocea Dennis, which forced a York 56-yard attempt. The kick was wide right, keeping the score 16-7.

On the ensuing drive for Tampa Bay, the Bucs traveled 54 yards in five plays for the score. The Bucs were set up at first-and-goal following a defensive pass interference and facemask penalty on Emmanuel Forbes. Mayfield then connected with Godwin on a corner route for a four-yard touchdown. Midway through the third quarter, the Bucs took a 23-7 lead. With that score, Godwin broke a tie with Jimmie Giles (34) for the second-most receiving touchdowns in franchise history.

Both teams then traded three-and-outs, with the Bucs' punt coming courtesy of a Clelin Ferrell sack of Mayfield on third down. The Commanders then traveled down the field and capitalized with a Daniels' one-yard touchdown rush. The six-play, 60-yard drive trimmed the Commanders' deficit, 23-14. The Bucs' offense immediately responded, as a 32-yard screen by Rachaad White (established that Graham Barton was not illegally downfield) set up a Jalen McMillan TD. McMillan motioned inside before the snap and took off with a speedy release, running a post. Mayfield delivered a bomb and hit McMillan in stride for a 32-yard score. Tampa Bay took a 30-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

The Bucs' defense then forced a quick exit. On second down, Lavonte David fired on a blitz, forcing Jayden Daniels off his spot. SirVocea Dennis then finished it off with a sack of 13 yards, bringing up third-and-20 and an ensuing punt for Washington.

Baker Mayfield and company then led a methodical 12-play, 91-yard scoring drive, featuring a 31-yard run for Bucky Irving following a quick cut to the boundary and a tunnel screen by Godwin that picked up 24 yards. A couple plays later, an 11-yard scramble by Mayfield brought the Bucs to the Washington 21. Mayfield then found Evans for a one-yard touchdown, extending the Bucs' lead, 37-14. The Commanders came back with a score of their own on a Daniels' one-yard touchdown rush. The two-point attempt failed on an incomplete pass to McCaffrey, and the score remained 37-20.
