Bucs' Release Week Three Depth Chart: Greg Gaines Assumes Larger Role

With Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea suffering injuries early in the season, the Bucs have leaned on veteran DL Greg Gaines for a lot more snaps than he was used to in 2023

DepthChartTB

Each week during the regular season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' communications department publishes a "Game Release" to aid the media in coverage of their upcoming game. Within that release are a number of documents regarding the player roster, including a depth chart, which lists the pecking order at every position on offense, defense and special teams.

Each game week, we will be taking a closer look at that depth chart, pointing out any changes or relevant notes from the previous game. Let's start on offense. Rookies are marked with an asterisk. Players we will be discussing in depth are highlighted in bold text.

OFFENSE

WR: Mike Evans, Trey Palmer

WR: Chris Godwin, Kameron Johnson *

LT: Tristan Wirfs, Justin Skule

LG: Ben Bredeson, Royce Newman

C: Graham Barton *, Robert Hainsey

RG: Cody Mauch, Elijah Klein *

RT: Luke Goedeke

WR: Jalen McMillan *

TE: Cade Otton, Payne Durham, Ko Kieft, Devin Culp *

QB: Baker Mayfield, Kyle Trask

RB: Rachaad White, Bucky Irving *, Sean Tucker

Rachaad White continues to get the largest share of the backfield snaps, with 34 this week to 17 for Bucky Irving, despite White briefly leaving the game in Detroit with a groin injury. The handoff tally was closer to even, however, with White taking 10 and Irving getting seven. White was the only one of the two to catch a pass. Second-year man Sean Tucker has yet to play on offense but he did get 11 snaps on special teams and made one kick-coverage tackle.

For the second week in a row, the Bucs leaned heavily on 11 personnel on offense, with wide receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan all playing exactly 38 snaps. However, tight end Cade Otton was on the field for all 48 offensive plays, recreating his role from last season, in which he played 97% of the snaps. Otton was only targeted twice, neither one of them resulting in a completion.

Justin Skule filled in for the sidelined Luke Goedeke, who is in the NFL's concussion protocol, at right tackle. It was the first start for Skule as a Buccaneer, though he previously made 12 starts for the San Francisco 49ers across the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

DEFENSE

DL: Calijah Kancey, Ben Stille

NT: Vita Vea, Greg Gaines

DL: Logan Hall, William Gholston

OLB: Yaya Diaby, Anthony Nelson, Markees Watts

ILB: K.J. Britt, J.J. Russell

ILB: Lavonte David, SirVocea Dennis

OLB: Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Chris Braswell *, Jose Ramirez

CB: Jamel Dean, Tyrek Funderburk *

CB: Zyon McCollum, Josh Hayes, Keenan Isaac

S: Antoine Winfield Jr., Christian Izien, Tavierre Thomas

S: Jordan Whitehead, Tykee Smith *, Kaevon Merriweather

Greg Gaines is listed as the backup to Vita Vea at nose tackle, but with Calijah Kancey missing the first two games with a calf injury and Vea leaving Sunday's game with a knee injury just after halftime, Gaines has been the team's most active defensive lineman. He was utilized as a 3-4 end in the Week One win over Washington and in Detroit he saw his highest snap count in a game since he joined the Buccaneers in 2023. Gaines played 42% of the defensive snaps last season but in Detroit he was on the field for 66 plays out of a possible 85, for a usage rate of 78%.

Second-year linebacker SirVocea Dennis also saw his role expand against the Lions. He is currently splitting the second off-ball linebacker spot next to Lavonte David with K.J. Britt, with Dennis getting most of the action in clear passing downs. Against Detroit, Dennis actually played more snaps than Britt, 44-41, and he produced a career-high 10 tackles.

After filling in at outside cornerback in Week One due to a rash of injuries at the spot, Christian Izien moved to the back end of the secondary, playing free safety in place of the injured Antoine Winfield Jr. Izien played all 85 defensive snaps and had a key fourth-quarter interception at the Bucs' nine-yard line.

SPECIALISTS

P: Jake Camarda

PK: Chase McLaughlin

KO: Jake Camarda

H: Jake Camarda

LS: Evan Deckers

PR: Trey Palmer, Kameron Johnson *, Jalen McMillan *

KR: Bucky Irving*, Kameron Johnson *

KR: Sean Tucker, Jalen McMillan *

Outside linebacker Anthony Nelson, who also played 25 snaps on defense, pulled off the rare feat of being on the field for every special teams snap. That was a total of 26 plays, four more than cornerback Tavierre Thomas, who was next on the list. Thomas was not on the field goal/extra point unit, which accounted for that four-snap difference. Bucky Irving and Sean Tucker were again the duo to line up deep for kickoff returns, though the Lions booted all of their kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
