On Friday, Head Coach Lovie Smith announced that the Bucs' first-round pick, Jameis Winston, will be the team's starter at quarterback. Smith opened his press conference with the announcement.
"Jameis Winston will be our starting quarterback, he'll take the first reps tomorrow," Smith said. "We're excited about that."
Smith continued, "A lot of things go into that (decision). We've had a lot of evaluation of him. It's where we feel like he is. We brought him here to be our quarterback and we feel that he's ready to take this next step. We're not game-ready, we're not Tennessee-ready at a lot of positions but he needs to move into that role right now. Again, we all feel good about him going there."
Smith said that he informed Winston that he would be the starter a earlier in the offseason, but has not formally introduced the depth chart to the team yet.
Winston and the Bucs will take the field on Saturday, August 1st, for their first day of training camp practice.
