The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost to the Carolina Panthers, 27-6, on Sunday in a Week 13 game at Bank of America Field. Below are the thoughts of various Buccaneer players and coaches following the game:
Head Coach Greg Schiano
RE: Today's outcome
"Obviously (we) made too many mistakes both as coaches and players to have an opportunity to win that game against a good football team in Carolina. Early in the game we had plenty of opportunities to make it a good football game and we did not capitalize and they did. Again, coaching and playing, this was a team top to bottom loss, starting with me. We've got to figure out how we're going to get some of these things back to where we were doing them successfully. My hat's off to Carolina. I think they had something to do with it for sure. Offensively, we had trouble handling their front. At the beginning of the second half I think we kind of found our stride a little bit running the football, but then after a turnover and we got to the point where we had to try to throw it to stay in the football game then it made it one-dimensional. We didn't run the ball well enough in the first half, which again, coaching and playing. We didn't do enough to help them as coaches and we didn't execute well enough on the field."
RE: Play calling?
"Not just. I just didn't feel like we gave them enough good opportunities. I look at some of this stuff, it's on me. We've got to figure out a way to put them in better situations. It's easy to say play calling. When play calls work, they're great and when they don't they're not. I just mean overall, why do we show today and not perform the way we're capable of and all the reasons guys miss. That's fine. That's the way it's been and we needed to play better. I did not think. We had an excellent week at practice. Just got to go back to work. "
RE: Glennon protecting the ball
"I don't know. He maybe looked more like a rookie than he's looked. The ball slips out of his hand going to his left. That's an awkward deal and unfortunate, but it happened unfortunately. The throw to Vince (Jackson) that gets intercepted and the flag gets picked up on that play. It just didn't look like it came off his hand clean. There were a couple of those today. I'm not sure why. I guess everybody, including yours truly sometimes doesn't have a great day. "
RE: Run against their defense
"It's interesting. If you look at the total body of work, you're right. We didn't run the ball well, but there were times we popped ten yard runs out there, even in the first half. So that's why I say we didn't help them enough. I don't know. We've got to look at did we have too much, did we have not enough. Did we have the right stuff, did we have the wrong stuff. Again, I don't want to make it all about us, the coaches. This was a team loss. We didn't execute well enough. We didn't coach well enough and they did. They executed. We did some things. We took the ball away a couple of times. Defensively, we didn't tackle the way I…. and I don't know why. That's another reason, as the Head Coach I didn't get us to tackle the way we're capable of. Whether that's emotions or whether that's technical stuff I'm not really sure. All that really counts is what happens in those three hours and we didn't get it done. "
RE: 38 point gap between Bucs & Carolina in last two games
"It's easy for me to say no, I don't think the gap's that wide but then again, there's two games of proof. You go back a year ago and we won two times. Two close games, but we won. I don't know. I guess it is what it is when you look at the scores. We beat Miami and Miami had them down to the last play. So you start going into that score game and how do you know. We just didn't play well today and that's what I know. When you live in the one game season mode like we do and you have to, it's really hard to win in an NFL football game. You put everything into it and it doesn't work then you've got to evaluate what you did. Did you not do the right things. Did you not give your guys the best chance to win. The guys have got to evaluate what didn't they do. Did they do too much? Who knows. We've got to look at it though because we've got six days and then we've got Buffalo. We've got to figure it out. "
RE: Uncharacteristic defensive breakdowns
"Well, you had Cam's long run, which he's done to a lot of people, but make it a 20 yard run, not a 50 or 60 yard run. Get him on the ground. We had the bust down in the Red Zone for the touchdown and then we got beat on a double move. There were a couple of breakdowns, that you're right, are uncharacteristic of that defense, but when you look up and twenty-something points later, that's why. "
RE: Did you speak to the referee (picked up flag on interception)
"Just the way he saw it. The ball was in the air so the hold was negated. "
RE: Effect on team not taking the lead before the half
"Certainly when you have an opportunity on the road to go ahead and you don't I think it's big. There was a call in there when Cam (Newton) scrambled and grounded the ball that didn't get…that's obviously one man's opinion, so there were some things that happened on that drive that were rough, but you've got to be able to overcome that stuff. That's what good football teams do and we've been able to do that at times this year. Today we didn't do that. "
RE: Third-down struggles
"I'm anxious to see the video. (I) Didn't feel like there were a lot of people open and I felt like you're not going to have very long against that front to get rid of it so if we don't get them open fast then we're going to have a problem. It just didn't feel that way. It's hard to split your vision. I was kind of watching the protection more and watching Mike (Glennon ) more. I tried to catch it on the jumbotron, but you're right. To say we struggled on 3rd down would be an understatement. We were non-effective. Again, that's what I talk about. Did we help them enough? They've got to execute. Together we've got a game plan. We've got to get this thing better in short order. "
RE: Darrelle Revis injury
"Just a shoulder and chest injury. I don't know much more. He didn't return as you saw. "
QB Mike Glennon
Re: Turnovers
"The first one wasn't really a careless mistake. Just the ball slipped out of my hand, and it really hurt us because we would have gotten at least three points in that situation. And the second one…tried to make a play, and I should have just thrown it away. But you know those are situations I will learn from, and I'll be better because of it."
Re: How much did the first turnover take the air out of the balloon because you had a chance to take the lead in the second quarter?
"We marched right down the field and got to the four-yard line, but against that defense… their red-zone defense is so good that we knew going into the game that we were going to need touchdowns not field goals but yeah, that definitely hurt us. And who knows what would have happened."
Re: Four drives with no touchdowns
"First thing you have to give credit to that defense. They are one of the best defenses in the league and they played like it today. They beat us. They stopped our run game. They did a good job on our pass game. They played better than us and that is something that we will learn from. We will go back and watch the film and we will make the corrections. "
Re: Is this a learning moment for you?
"Yeah, I think it is always a learning moment. Like I always say, you can learn from the good. You learn from the bad. And there was some bad today that I will learn from. You have to look at it that way. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice, so I'll go back and watch the film and go from there. "
Re: Third-down protection
"Again, it is hard to tell when you are on the field exactly what happened. So that's another thing we'll have to look at, but I'm not exactly sure. They did a good job. They did a good job covering our guys. They did a good job getting pressure. I probably could have made a few more throws here and there, but it is hard to say right now. "
Re: Having lost by a combined 38 points, is Carolina far superior?
"We have played some good football teams, but they are definitely up there. They have won eight in a row now and that means you are a good football team. Offensively, defensively, they are playing at a high level right now. I think we have played against some other good ones, and it's hard to compare, but they are definitely up there. "
Re: Is Carolina better now than they were five weeks ago?
"I think, similar outcomes. They played well both times, and we didn't play our best so it's hard to say. "
Re: Did you think Vincent Jackson scored on the deep ball in the second?
"Sometimes it's hard to see from back there. I couldn't really see exactly. He did a great job of getting open, so from the four-yard line we should be able to score regardless. "
Re: Is this a result of some missed opportunities?
"I think so. We turned the ball over for the first time in a while, and we missed a few opportunities here and there but at the same time, we have to be a better offense all three downs so we are not put in those third-and-long situations against such a good defense. "
CB Danny Gorrer
RE: Today's loss
"It was definitely tough because I think, as a team, we prepared to win this game, we all thought we were going to come in here and take care of business and we kind of beat ourselves. We give credit to those guys in the other locker room, but it definitely came down to some of the things that we know we could've done better. We've got to just take it one day at a time, go watch film and put this one behind us and get ready for Buffalo."
RE: Carolina looking different than during the first game
"It really wasn't any different. They're a good football team and they showed that today and like they did last time we played. They came out and they executed well and we didn't. You've got to give credit to those guys and their coaching staff. We've got to put this one behind us and get ready for Buffalo."
DT Gerald McCoy
RE: Carolina's offense
"They can do a whole lot of different things, not just one thing. They actually didn't run, which you'd expect, they threw a lot of stuff in there because of I guess how we've been playing against the run. They changed a lot of stuff up."
RE: Newton's run
"We've just got to tackle and if we get him by the sidelines, just push him out. We could've saved 40 yards."
RE: Carolina on 4th and goal before halftime
"It's not tough; we just have to stop them. You've got an athletic guy who made an athletic play. It's not tough at all, it's football."
RE: Reasons why Carolina won both games decisively
"They beat us; physically, mentally, every facet of the game. They just dominated us. It's what happens."
T Donald Penn
RE: Today's Game
"We have to go ahead and execute the plan; we have a good plan in our hand. Today we didn't. You've got to give Carolina a little credit. They did a good job of going out there and playing. I'll tell you one thing; I'll mark that game on my schedule next year because I can't wait to play them again and get my revenge. I've got to take my hat off to them. We've got to do a better job; when we're in the red zone we've got to score and we've got to score touchdowns. We can't come away with field goals, especially against a good defense like this. They're rolling, they've got all of the momentum, you can't go down there in the red zone and score field goals, and you've got to score touchdowns. We've got to do a better job, personally I've got to do a better job. Like I said, there were two plays I wish I could really have back. It's killing me right now."
RE: The two plays that you wish you could redo
"The sack I gave up right before halftime and I had a mental lapse on the second series of the second half. The blitz came off the edge and I should've picked it up. I just had a mental lapse, I don't do that. That's not me and that's something that's really eating me up right now."
RE: Finishing drives
"Against this good of a team, we can't just score field goals. We've got to score touchdowns. They came out with a good plan to stop the run, you adjust it at halftime, got stuff rolling, but by then it was a little too late. No matter what, we've got to make it easier on the defense. They've been playing their butts off and we've got to make it easier on them. We've got to play better football. It's not a short week but we've got to get this turned around really fast. This is a sick feeling going three in a row and then coming here and not playing your best football."
RE: Carolina stopping the run
"I'm not going to get into all of that. They did some things…I don't want other teams to listen to what I'm saying. They did some things that we should've picked up but we didn't. They didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, it was things that we've seen and we should've done to pick up but it's a tough feeling right now. I'm so mad at myself, I've got to play better."
RB Bobby Rainey
RE: Carolina stopping the run game
"They really didn't do anything that we didn't expect to see. We just didn't do a great job as a unit. We just didn't have a good day today, as far as running the ball…like how we usually run the ball. When we came out in the second half, we ran a little better, but depending on the situation that we had we had to throw the ball and get away from the run a little bit."
RE: Turnovers
"We've just got to play our game, like we've been playing and not beat ourselves up. When we don't beat ourselves, we're a great team. We didn't do that today and the results showed."
RE: Crediting Carolina
"Oh definitely, you can't take credit from them; you've got to give them credit. They did a great job coming out today, all across the board. You've got to give them credit…what is it? Eight games now? They didn't just win eight games for no reason, same as us, we didn't win three straight for no reason. They did what they're supposed to do today."
